Jeweled colourful smokey eyes certainly takes anyone out of their comfort zone. Living in Asia I have come across many women who think slathering their eyes with black opens them up.
The common myth with women everywhere is: Layer black to make your eyes look bigger.
Black adds drama yes but bigger, no.
As I had lunch today with a fellow makeup artist she pointed out a simpler way of explaining this: 'We wear black to look smaller.'
Well put Sital! Not that there aren't times when you may want to have a blacked out, piercing eye.

Apply a light shadow or eye primer. I prefer to use Benefit's Creaseless cream shadows - this one shown is Birthday Suit. Want a lovely day look? Wear this on it's own with some masacara.

For deepset eyes and Asian eyes or any eye shape that you need to create a larger 'lid' cheat your crease above your natural socket bone.

Look directly into a mirror to cheat the crease placement. A darker shade recedes, I've chosen a charcoal / jewelled purple combo vs a traditional smokey eye with black and brown. You can totally opt for black. Try a black / gold combo. Stunning!

This is where you can go crazy with your mascara! I love the Tammy Faye look... well Tammy Faye down a notch or three.

Here's another colourful smokey eye I did. Have a look at more tips here.
Tip: If you have a larger eyelid that you want to hide, apply a darker colour to your lid not a brighter hue and apply a thicker line of eyeliner at your lash line.
Here are some real ladies who have sat under my brush.
