All things beauty and then some. Andrea Claire [as seen on Stylin' Gypsies and So Chic] hair & make up artist/freelance beauty writer dips her fingers into the latest trends and brings you the coveted best and how-tos.
When I was in high school there was a girl who had her hair perfectly coiffed and frozen in place - from the front - the back was flat as a board - sure it was the 80s but that was no excuse. Even before I got into hair and makeup I noticed these things and wanted to help.
At one point in time - The back of your head looks RIDICULOUS! - meant it truly looked ridiculous - case and point in the aforementioned story.
Now 'The back of your head looks RIDICULOUS!' - means your hair looks amazing!
Here is one 'fab from the back' chignon:
Blow out your hair with a round brush
Secure into a simple side ponytail - hide the elastic with the hair
Fishtail the ponytail
Wrap and pin the tail flat against your head - each time you can play with the chignon shape.
The key to any updo is to think about your hair in sections: isolate your areas! Here I started at the nap and braided to give the illusion of an upsweep. The braid acts as an anchor for the complete style as well as gives it a little interest.
Next I pulled the hair back and twisted it. Where the twist is you will see a seam. Pin there. Cross your pins in an 'X', especially for stubborn hair which then locks it all in place.
Long before GAGA we had hair bows. I love them! As a hairstylist the sectioning and how-to is a little hard to explain as we aim for perfection; lots of sectioning, back-brushing, smoothing, spraying and pinning.... whew!
This is an image from my portfolio that I did hair and makeup on, roughly in 2004. Photo by Arline Malakian.
I guaranty that the time and effort involved was more than the youtube tutorials out there but I was VERY impressed with this one that I had to share.
bebexo I believe is her youtube ' handle' - her method is easy and keeps in some texture so more wearable than the high fashion version.
This is my hair bow - it withstood trying on clothes. I thought wearing my hair up would deter me from shopping.... nope. I like the deconstructed bow, a bit more 'day time'.
