TV host Linda Black plays Music Mom for Motherhood magazine

Motherhood magazine asked me what I thought would be a fun story for their April issue themed music -of course a little playtime for mom with the help of Linda Black and photographer Zurina Bryant!

*You can click on the images for a closer look of what hair and makeup products I used, plus a few tips.

Linda's hair colour I do using Original Mineral which is free from ammonia, ppd and resorcinol!! Ask your stylist to use a more eco-friendly and human-friendly hair colour like Original Mineral.

Apologies to O&M who emailed me saying that Rootilicious should be corrected to Rootalicious - hopefully sales weren't affected too much by confused buyers.

Notice the Face Lace I used in the Rock'n'Roll Mom? I am LOVING this cool makeup applique!

A behind the scenes video can be found here.

Glam makeover - Double duty beauty || Red Carpet or Bridal

Ms Photogenic - Kyra looked stunning in so many photos that I obviously had a hard time picking images to use.

I had a call-out on my Facebook page looking for a glam makeover volunteer [and thank you as I had many!] - Singapore-based photographer - Kyra Ann was happy to oblige.

Known for my love for Dermalogica you can bet that that was part of my first step.

Kyra's base includes:

  • Oil-Free Matte, Skinperfect Primer, Sheer Tint in Light & Dark all Dermalogica
  • Savoir Faire Concealer (that I am just trying out - review later)
  • SkinFood Peach Sake powder only in the t-zone

Yes- I used those lashes too but they were applied later.

My NARS Danmari All About Cheeks palette is well-loved.

Kyra's eyes:

NARS Pro-prime Smudge Proof Eyeshadow Base a primer that grips shadows from lash line to brow bone to avoid creasing and fading
NARS Nymphea on the lids [pictured above]
Urban Decay Snakebite in the crease which I applied slightly above Kyra's natural crease to create a more open shape
Bobbi Brown Gel Long-Wear Eye Pencil in Jet smudged on the upper lash line
Ben Nye Cork from the Essential Eye Shadow palette under the lower lashes
Ardell Cluster Lashes - just a few in the middle of the upper lashes
Rimmel Scandeleyes Mascara

I set Krya's hair using Remington's travel rollers from Target - they're ceramic, cheap, dual voltage and fab! The goal here is not aiming for curl but just added body, shine and a bend to the hair to work with - make sure the ends smooth around the roller avoiding fishhooks.

Barbie? Is that you??

*Tip - Set hair in rollers as you do your makeup -this gives the hair time to cool for a longer-lasting shape. If the hair has not cooled down leave the rollers in until it does.

Brush the hair straight and slightly upwards. Gather as if to put it into a ponytail - grip hair at the base with one hand and twist the tail with the other hand until it twists in your hand creating a seam - pin along the seam with 'X' to lock your pins.

*Tip - clean up all the fly-a-ways at the hairline if they bother you with a toothbrush and hair wax

Back brush the ends of the hair - I used my fabulous Mason Pearson brush. Why back brushing vs back combing? Back brushing creates a fuller build up of hair.
Gently brush the top layer of the hair back, over the lovely nest you just made and pin at the back.
[who else thinks 'If I had a photograph of you... ' here?

Kyra never wears a red lip so I wanted to show her how much a makeup can change with just an alternate lip colour.

With Givenchy #5 Rouge lip liner and NARS Jungle Red lipstick

FACEatelier's Cameo lip pencil and MAC Cosmetics classic Twig lipstick

*aside from the on-camera flash and my Glamcor Lights Kit there is nothing fancy going on here besides Kyra, hair and makeup products. I have no Photoshop - nor would I know how to use it.

Now you are set to strut your stuff down the Red Carpet, the aisle or at a fancy gala.

My latest hairspray love? O&M Original Queenie - that 'do is going nowhere in a convertible on the Autobahn

Red lips are stunning but also high maintenance - don't forget to check your teeth!

I show you more red lip tips here on Yahoo's Glam Up!

#TotesAdorbs! Therese's tresses get chopped, coloured & coiffed! (by me)

I've said it before: I love a makeover; especially when I am in control. *wink*

Therese has a fabulous blog, articulate and interesting. We first met when I had a Twitter giveaway for MINX nails.

Therese popped by my petite studio for another go in the beauty hot-seat.

Luscious locks right? A hairstylist's dream to be given carte blanche. Thanks Therese!

With all the mirrors covered Therese could only guess how silly she looked at this point.

After cutting the perimeter and point-cutting her layers with my scissors I wanted to add a little texture with my razor.

NOTE: Don't shy away from a hairstylist's razor as the effect can be quite cool. I love it for added texture and volume for free-style hairstyles. You just need to make sure your stylist's razor is sharp otherwise your hair will split. I put in a new blade minutes before cutting Therese's hair. Need a middle-woman for your hairstylist? Take my tips with you.

The big reveal...

Ta da!!!

The colour breakdown: I put 2 shades of foils in her hair, cinnamon and dark mahogany; leaving the top of her hair and hairline her natural colour. Why? Her natural shade is beautiful. Asian hair has a tendency to absorb light without dimension so my goal was to create dimension and a low maintenance but fun style for her. Find more Asian hair colouring tips here.

Prepping for makeup. One of my favourite things that I have found in Singapore is this dohickey velcro hair thingy. It works great for keeping a fringe (bangs) swept out of the way without a clip mark left in the hair when you remove it. Beauty Geek loves these too!

Another fave of mine: Shadow Shields, they catch the eyeshadow fallout. I do have some for sale if you live in Singapore and want some. DM me for details.

The finished makeup.

What I used:

FACEatelier Ultra Foundation #5

Bobbi Brown Shimmer Brick in Nectar

Benefit Creaseless Cream Shadow in RSVP [I constantly give them love and no one from Benefit has ever tried to reach out to me so I mention them out of pure love for the product with zero industry perks. Translation: it's THAT good.]

A light brown Ben Nye eyeshadow in the crease or you can get Wedge by MAC Cosmetics, same thing.

Bobbi Brown Gel liner in Bronze

Mascara on top of Therese's beautifully permed lashes! OMG - totally seeking eyelash perming now... I WANT!

Lips were glossed with a bronzey-lipgloss I got in one of my BellaBox boxes. Beauty subscriptions are such a fab idea!

The new Therese!!

I blew out Therese's hair with a medium size round brush using Marc Anthony's [no, not the singer] Anti-Aging leave-in treatment and the Strictly Curls spray for loose bounce and waves.

We had soooo much fun. Click to see Therese's blog about her makeover experience.

Ponytail CHOPPED! Donate your hair to Locks of Love

Brave Ashley came to see me yesterday for a haircut. She was open to change. I had suggested a collarbone length, choppy, razor-ed, fun cut! But then a brainstorm happened! How about sending a ponytail to Locks of Love, an organization who takes hair for children in need of wigs?

"Locks of Love is a public non-profit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children under age 21 suffering from long-term medical hair loss from any diagnosis. We meet a unique need for children by using donated hair to create the highest quality hair prosthetics.

Our mission is to return a sense of self, confidence and normalcy to children suffering from hair loss by utilizing donated ponytails to provide the highest quality hair prosthetics to financially disadvantaged children. The children receive hair prostheses free of charge or on a sliding scale, based on financial need."

I know I called her 'Brave Ashley' but she didn't need any convincing; when you are doing a good thing for others it's easy to follow through.

Reading through the criteria from Locks of Love I am corrected by one thing I tell everyone. I had said 'hair needs to be 100% virgin hair, meaning untouched by any chemical process.'

Correction: Your hair can have some chemical processes. Read to know  more tips via Locks of Love on how to donate your hair.

Secure the hair at the base and tie the ends. Chop! A minimum length of 10 inches is needed.

*See previous before and afters that I have done on TV here.

**I am trying to gently PUSH for a makeover show in Singapore. Come on production companies! I have ideas, experience and scissors! ;)

During the December holidays Luxola & Francisca were holding a holiday beauty and fashion event and asked if I wanted to be on-hand to give some makeup tips to the attendees; mais oui! Expat Living then asked if they could pop by and gather some info for their readers. You know me - happy to share and who doesn't love a makeover!

Just out in time to celebrate Chinese New Year:

As seen in Expat Living's Style & Beauty Guide 2012

As seen in Expat Living's Stye & Beauty Guide, 2012! Why thank you EL for that lovely compliment!

PS: One teeny tiny correction: I did not do Natalie Imbruglia's makeup in the past. I did her manicure on a L'Oreal commercial and assisted  Max, the hair guy... who was putting her hair in a ponytail. LOL. He did not need me. I had worked on two of the L'Oreal spots that Natalie was in that year. She was such a joy! The above pic from left to right: Nat's assistant, Natalie, Max and moi. [So sorry to not use her assistant's name but this was YEARS ago... 2002?? I forget - aging curse] Her makeup artist was Collier Strong, a very sweet guy who has been a L'Oreal official mua for years.

Yes - I have done hair & makeup for tons of A-listers but I cannot take credit for coiffing up Natalie. My celeb portfolio here.

Side note: I was the L'Oreal Paris hair consultant in Canada and creative directed the hair team for 3 seasons of fashion week and 2 seasons of Canadian Idol, both L'Oreal Paris sponsored events.

I've been digging through my past and present videos from my TV shows and appearances for my FB page and came across one start to finish makeover I did from my two seasons on Stylin' Gypsies circa 2003-05.Fun right?

Sassy host is Karen Bertelsen.

Enjoy. [and here's another one - warning I attempt to belly dance too]

AC.

PS: Inspired to get a new 'do? Here's an article I wrote for Austin Woman magazine with tips on refreshing your look.

Once upon a time, Andrea Claire was on a makeover show; 2 actually. Stylin' Gypsies and So Chic with Steven and Chris. I LOVE before and after's don't you?

These shots were from Stylin' Gypies, hosted by the talented/funny Karen Bertelsen shown originally on the W Network, Canada and then on UKStyle, TV Mobile Singapore, Channel 5 Malaysia/Singapore and more.

BTW: I am often asked what the heck is that Karen up to? Well, looky here, Karen has... well, mastered the Art of Doing Stuff!

On these before and afters, I did haircolours, cuts and makeup

You can see more here. Sadly, I never documented all 8 seasons of the makeover shows I did. Duh.

I do see private clients, I do answer beauty questions, but, sorry; I don't do windows.
