J.Crew's Fall Collection Is Saving Me Money!

By Andrea Claire · March 31, 2011 · 0 Comments ·

VISA and my husband both know how much I love(d) J.Crew.

But this coming Fall season: F*cking boring. Why so harsh? I'm tired and punchy.

But for serious...

I saw this on The Cut Blog

They call this the 'NEON Collection' Um. I was an 80s teen.... this is not neon... nor do the clothes seem to fit - glance at Chica back left wearing the mint crew neck sweater with burnt orange pants. Those pants look like they are hiding Depends already.

I found another blog The Pursuit Aesthetic, who raved about it along with Cut Blog's love. Hm. Still can't agree.Wonder if the authors are men who don't like women?

Ok. It's not ALL bad. I like the red bag front left.

I find this Fall 2011 a little too Mary Tyler Moore meets Rhoda.

I much prefer Fall 2010... and I also prefer Mary's pantsuit vs the 2011s.

Aside from the fact someone needs to feed this poor girl - Fall 2010 has way more interest than Fall 2011.

I think I will be giving J.Crew a pass this Fall. (Which is fine cuz I live in Singapore so too bloody hot anyway!)

Not to worry J.Crew: I'm sure VISA and I will see you in the spring!

By Andrea Claire · March 30, 2011 · 0 Comments ·

Get excited guys – for the first time ever, thedramadiaries creatives [Faz's new creatives company!] is organising an event, and it’s a fundraiser for Japan!

APRIL 19th from 10am - 12pm at Seb's, 7 Rochester Place [on facebook]

For a minimum donation of $50, get yourself prettied up with your morning coffee by Singapore’s most talented makeup artists including, the internationally renowned Andrea Claire, who has worked on Lady Antebellum, Alanis Morisette, and locally, MTV VJ Holly Graberek [to name a few... PS I've also worked on Mini Me] Andrea will also be doing a how-to makeup talk! [OK - Faz wrote 90% of this - I will interject in square bracketts. At about 10:20am I will conduct a how-to get glam in 10 minutes in the a.m. TRUE STORY! You can do this!]

You can bring makeup palettes you’re not sure how to use, or anything else you’ve had on your dresser that you can’t quite figure out for a one-on-one makeup consultation and makeover [think camera ready tricks, tips and touchups]. Post-makeover, there’ll be a photobooth ran by pro photographer, MaryAnn from Studio Loft who’ll be snapping photos for keepsake. [Please don't think full on makeover as seen here, I wish we had the time and artist power for this but if we get the turnout that match our RSVPS, I'm sorry but you won't get a major over-haul. BUT I promise loads of fun, tips and just a great morning o' beauty! We are talking to many beauty peeps for things like express manicures, hairstylists, massage people...]

RSVP AT FAZ@THEDRAMADIARIES.COM TO RESERVE SEATS.

Mums with kids should take note that there’s a little play area within Rochester House so kids will be taken care of while you’re getting prettied up! Child-minding services are free for the first hour.

Coffee, tea & soft drinks are also complimentary!

FEATURING THE FOLLOWING MAKEUP ARTISTS: ANDREA CLAIRE, JOANNA KOH, SARAH CHAUDHRY, DEWI MAHONEY [Sarah and Dewi - gimme your links]

Blow Dryer Fail: Melting CHI

By Andrea Claire · March 27, 2011 · 0 Comments ·

You would think that a blow dryer that blows hot air would actually take the heat.

This is my Nano CHI. I love CHI. I don't love that this blow dryer melted after I used my diffuser.

20 years of doing hair and with all the tools I have owned, I have NEVER seen a blow dryer meltdown...

Dear CHI: Please send me a new blow dryer or my money back. Thanks.

So you wanna be famous? Already are? A-B-C or Double D- list? If you are A or B you probably have a makeup artist....

Hopefully a good one.

When people like Snooki give beauty a very bad mane - I mean name... you have to wonder: Are we losing our style?

Judging from this recent photo, even Snooki realized the error of her ways.

Joan Rivers, who is a pulled a little too tight has opinions on what not to wear but really as a member of the Fashion Police she needs to give herself a ticket.

And finally... what inspired this blog.

photo: Traci Melchor  via Jody Daye's Facebook page

Jody Daye, a good friend / fellow makeup magician and I just had a Facebook public display of horror over beautiful Traci Melchor's TV appearance. Traci is a well known TV presenter in Canada. All I can say is 'What was she thinking?!'

Jody's thoughts:

For me its all a little 2-
Too much hair weave/piece
Too much contour
Too much earring
Too much Animal Print- Giraffes are afraid of that blouse
Too much try...

Poor Traci. We are here to help.

I found this image online.

Dearest Traci: This is lovely. The other - ditch it. You are too young and beautiful to look like an Auntie.

Now - Jody and I are no slouch when it comes to TV appearances. Both of us have a lot of behind the camera and on-camera experience. I am sure I can speak for both of us when I say - we aren't always perfect. Well, Jody has no kids and a little more vain than I so... maybe he is perfect.

If you are going on TV... whether it's your first appearance or your last, inspire your TV glow from Ms JLo herself. Nothing says Hot Damn - I'm gorgeous like the famous JLo Glow. Her makeup artist needs a beauty medal. Troy? Is that you?

*Fake lashes IF they are NOT plastic are fine IF you know how to put them on. Brown lashes are easier to blend into your own lashes. Ardell has nice real hair lashes. Why not the plastic ones? They are heavy. They reflect light. They are ugly.

*Eyebrows. Eyebrows. Eyebrows. So many mishaps and misshapes. Best to not apply them without a lesson from a Brow Guru. There is a fine line between well-defined and Drag Queen. If you are Drag Racing, please, carry-on. If you are a woman, put the brow pencil down and walk away.

Everything else should remain OFF your face unless done by a professional or if you have been taught to do your makeup on the fly by a pro. You need to understand lighting and tv cameras and with the world of 'everyone is going on tv' these days - keep in mind:

  1. Less is MORE
  2. Wear SPANX

That is all.

PS. Or you can just hire us to make you pretty. ;)

Save A 7 Year Old Boy's Life: Singapore Charity Dinner

Email |

By Andrea Claire · March 20, 2011 · 0 Comments ·

The French Stall is a restaurant that we go to often. The duck leg confit is out of this world. I think the pommes frites are the best in Singapore! And Zoie Jean (2.5 years old) loves the dory fish. We've been about 15 times since March 2009 - always delish.

I don't want to focus on a food review as there is something way more important than French food.

Tonight at dinner we came across these cards at our table and posters plastered everywhere:

Just in case you cannot read the above, to summerize:

One of the staff at The French Stall is a single mother from the Philippines, her son has been diagnosed with Fallot's Tetralogy, a congenital heart disorder.

Her son needs an operation to survive. It will cost his mother $20,000, of which she doesn't have.

The French Stall is having a charity drive from March 25-27, 2011 where all the proceeds from the restaurant sales (less costs) will be going to save Kurt.

Please go and eat some fabulous French food, and in a country where tipping isn't the norm... please tip and tip big.

As a mother I can barely type this without being teary.

*Fact is - her son lives in the Philippines while she is here in Singapore. For many women from the Philippines who work in Singapore - this is their norm; children back in their home country while they work their butts off sending money home.

Kurt needs this surgery in May 2011 in order to live.

Please share this info.

You'd think I got new editing software or something.... ;D

I am drudging through files and came across this old clip from ETalk Daily.

I did the Degrassi girls for a Fashion18 magazine shoot. The lovely girls were being interviewed on ETalk at the same time. Don't they look fresh and pretty? FACEatelier foundation - my kit staple.

MUFE: Unretouched VS Dove Real Beauty

Email |
|
By Andrea Claire · March 16, 2011 · 0 Comments ·

Here are my thoughts:

The team

A pretty model - good skin and bone structure

A makeup artist

A pro-shooter = great lighting

Um. Yeah. Of course the results are beautiful. Like, duh!? I've seen many campaigns before retouching... retouching is at times a little overkill. We have pores. We are not aliens.

It's like "Watch us take a pretty girl with perfect skin and bone structure with a little baggage under her eyes and then we will light her beautifully" Yeah... so what?

Dove REAL Beauty campaign you are not.

[Makeup on this Dove campaign by the talented Diana Carreiro.]

Other thoughts here:

I'm A Beauty Geek

Temptalia

BellaSugar

Frankly, I would find this whole campaign more impressive if they used real women who did their own makeup with a makeup artist consulting and not models who have had the magic tricks from up our sleeves.

Update: Please don't get me wrong. As a makeup artist, I'd be proud to have this in my portfolio - the makeup is quite beautiful and zero retouching is quite an accomplishment... but showing pretty girls to society looking pretty as a campaign has no WOW factor.

This to me has more WOW factor - REAL women with ZERO retouching.
