Not a face powder fan but... I <3 Stila

If you are familiar with my hair & makeup work or know me you will know that for me to break out a powder is a feat. I just don't like the texture it gives the skin. It makes you look old. Women, in my opinion are oversold powder foundations more than Big Macs.

So when I say I have found a powder that I LOVE you know it has to be a good one. I'm a sucker for flash sale sites. I stalk the beauty links. Hautelook was having a flash sale on Stila.

With the description of the Illuminating Face Powder being:

"Let your inner radiance shine through with this unique, all-in-one powder foundation. Infused with Mica, tiny crystals found in nature, this unique formula helps reflect light for luminous skin that looks fresh and bright.Perfect for all skin types, illuminating powder foundation minimizes skin imperfections while maximizing sun protection with SPF 12 for ageless, timeless skin that simply glows. Apply dry for a light coverage or damp for more complete coverage."

I thought ok... I'll bite and buy a few. I always buy my shade so I can test it on my delicate Princess skin. Well... this powder has the Andrea Claire seal of approval and trust me that is HUGE!

stila 'illuminating' powder foundation SPF 12 $28.00 USD by Stila at Nordstrom Compact sold separately.

On the subject of powder...

Are you one of those ladies who reapplies all day because you think you are shiny?? Check your skincare. You may need a new routine or just try some blot film. Adding layers of powder truly ages you as it accentuates lines and you will look cakey. Apply your foundation once and then perhaps one t-zone touch-up, that's it!

Also bare in mind: over-powdering and even over-blotting will tell your oil glands that you need more oil and speed up the oil production process. Cut back powder and blotting and let your skin get back on track. True story.

Well as a major powder puff girl I am going to pick some of this up. Every time I emerge from a cloud of powder I laugh, imagining you cringing or rather, coughing a little...ok, a lot!

So for those who read comments Joy was trying to comment and it wouldn't stick. She sent me this:

"You were my first mentor that taught me all about giving the skin coverage while making it still look like skin. I rarely used powder too. But this major makeup artist in the industry I know swears by powder for bridal and editorial work. She doesn't just pat it on - she swirls a lot on with a brush, pats more on with a sponge, then buffs it out. She doesn't believe in primers so powder is the key to making her makeup lasts on clients. I know it works, but I'm still having a hard time trying to get on board with it. She powders the skin no matter the skin type even on mature skin. She says when you're done the makeup the skin's natural oils will come through and you will see your skin come through. On other people it seems to be ok, but when I try to do it on myself and on my under eyes I hate it. It just doesn't work for me even when I buff it out. But I do love that my makeup stays on for a long time. I think from now own I'll start spraying a setting spray to make it look less powdery. She swears by a loose powder by Clinique which is pretty good, but doesn't like any powder that gives the skin a luminous finish. Says they end up looking oily and shiny after a while in photos. She likes to use a powder highlighter to give the appearance of luminousity. Guess every makeup artist is different! Trying to marry my techniques and hers...."

My response to Joy:

You're right - we all have our 'thing' and what we prefer. It depends on the amount of luminescence that is in the powder though too. And I disagree with her. LOL

[That last bit was me being a little cheeky. Eye-wink As artists we all have our ways of doing things. As long as the end result is flawless it's ok the steps your prefer to get there - I'm just particular about powder]
