Welcome to week three of the AZMondayMakeover! You can recap the first two here.

There is a video above here. Don't see it? Please click on the post title.

Today's lovely lady is Vivian Pei. Vivian is a whiz in the kitchen. No really. She has an F&B consultancy business, does recipe development, teaches cooking, food stylist, organizes food tours.... Viv - am I leaving anything out?

before and after photos by Zurina Bryant

Now Vivian's before looks way more frazzled than one would expect. In all fairness she did just arrive after a frantic day of work and errands and we plunked her down without any real warning for her pic. (I don't even think she glanced in a mirror upon arrival) We let her open a bottle of champagne prior to sitting into my beauty chair - hey, we can be nice!

On Vivian I used:

Prep + Prime BB Beauty Balm Compact SPF 30 in Medium Plus $30.00 USD at M·A·C mainly under the eyes for added brightening.

Followed by FACEatelier foundation in #7 (Tan)

Benefit fakeup hydrating crease-control concealer, medium $24.00 USD at Macy's

Laura Mercier Mineral Finishing Powder $34.00 USD at Nordstrom

Too Faced Chocolate Soleil Matte Bronzing Powder $30.00 USD at Ulta

NARS 'Pro Prime' Smudgeproof Eyeshadow Base $24.00 USD at Nordstrom

This eyeshadow primer is clear and allows a smooth base for shadow. I applied it from lash line to brow bone.

Benefit creaseless cream eyeshadow in R.S.V.P, $20.00 USD at Macy's

Applied solely on Vivian's lid.

Laura Mercier Lustre Eye Colour USD at Nordstrom

With Vivian's eyes open, I applied LM Lustre Eye Colour in African Violet into the crease - pretty sure the image is of Chocolate and not African Violet but it shows the same shimmery quality.

Maybelline EyeStudio Baked Color Pearls Marbleized Eyeshadow Persuasive Plum $6.79 USD at Walgreens

I applied a sheer layer of this marbleized eyeshadow. I love these shadows! The way they pick up light is pretty and Hello! Cheap and cheerful!!

Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Gel Eyeliner $23.00 USD at Macy's

I used a deep plum / black that is no longer available. Sorry Dudettes.

Lip Lacquer $25.00 USD at NARS Cosmetics

I applied foundation onto Vivian's lips which isn't necessary - and after hearing what Vivian had to say (watch the video) about her lips I wish i hadn't chosen to take them down so much but she still pulls off this look nicely and hey - it's not a lip tattoo. ;)

For Vivian's hair:

I blew out Vivian's hair with Marc Anthony bye bye frizz blowout cream, tonged in some waves, pinned one side back and then set the final look with Original Mineral Original Queenie.

CHI Air Tex Tourmaline Ceramic 1" Curling Iron-Red $60.00 at jcpenney

I gave Vivian what I have dubbed as 'The Hollywood Mullet' (sleek on one side; sexy, wavy party on the other)

This is the CHI iron closest to what I could find to my vintage CHI with the Marcel arm. sigh I m not a fan of the wands nor the spring armed irons.

Let's talk about Vivian's dress by Lion Earl! I freakin' love this Singaporean label (I have yet to own one). Jewellery supplied by Singapore-based Killari.

The not-so-festive Turkey Neck!

By Andrea Claire · December 21, 2012 · 0 Comments ·

The turkey neck waddle and the decolletage are areas that we have neglected over the years. Guess what? A neglected neckline reveals more than you want to share - your age! Sure - maybe you are face focused and looking youthful with your creams serums, boosters, fillers and the Botoxed Barbie extremes from the neck up but what about below the chin?

Have you learned nothing from Ally McBeal?

Judge Jennifer 'Whipper' Cone (Dyan Cannon) gets some turkey waddle love by Richard Fish (Greg Germann) as seen on Ally McBeal.

When you apply your face creams are you stopping at your jawline? Yes? Are you using a neck cream? hm...

Our skin needs to be treated with love and devotion.

You can't ignore the beauty industry's influence just like you can't ignore the fashion influence of cerulean blue.

We don't make the aging rules but you do need to learn them to win the fight against aging! Maintaining hydration and elasticity focusing on collagen rejuvenation as we age is key. Of course we think of prevention - suncreen and regular skincare habits and that should not be limited to our face.

As you age do you ever wake up with creases on your bust? I am not talking breasts - just above the top of your cleavage to your collarbone. Those creases in the morning are signs of dehydration and over time they will stay, deepen and sag. Do you look at an older relative wondering if your decolletage area will become leathery like theirs? Are you focusing on Aunt Bertha's neck waddle when you are chatting with her? Don't get her confused with your Holiday turkey.

Delaying the signs of aging can be done with proper care. Keeping your skin nourished with creams is proven to be effective. This is me. I am 41. I have had no work done and there is no Photoshopping here - yes, a little Instagramming - I have used creams all over for years. If I get lazy with my body / neck creams I notice the difference within a week on my decolletage. Lather up with lotions Ladies and metro-Gents!

You can get a jump-start on your waddle and extra chins with Exilis. [I may or may not be giving this a go elsewhere... stay tuned.] But no helping hand is efficient without upkeep. Never too late to start with your magic potions.

Radical Skincare Firming Neck Gel  $125.00 USD at Barneys New York

Experience an immediate lift and a smoother, brighter skin tone on your neck and décolleté with this unique antioxidant-rich creamy emulsion. La Prairie Anti-Aging Neck Cream A Cellular Firming Complex  $225.00 USD at Bloomingdale's

Is your neck hinting at your age? The skin of the neck and chin ages differently from the skin of the face, and with aging, the chin may lose its youthful streamlined look. Scientists at La Prairie have developed a formula containing a complex designed to help re-contour the chin and neck area to a slimmer, firmer look. Other ingredients work to hydrate, smooth, and promote even skin tone. With regular use, the skin of the neck becomes silkier, smoother, and tighter. Benefits: Helps slim and re-shape the chin and neck area Boosts skin function to help restore density, firmness, elasticity and texture with a youth-restoring complex and an advanced peptide Renews skin hydration system to increase moisture retention Helps reduce age spots and promotes even skin tone through an anti-pigmentation complex The Application: Morning and evening. Using two hands and beginning at the bustline, stroke upward quickly toward neck and chin in rapid alternative strokes. Use more cream if necessary and apply to back of neck and upper shoulder area.

Perricone MD Perricone MD Firming Neck Therapy 2 oz (59 ml)  $98.00 USD at Beauty.com

The science to address specific skin concerns. Helps to firm, nourish and hydrate Minimizes appearance of deep lines and wrinkles. The first signs of age often appear in the neck area. This anti-glycation cream will help tone, tighten and form a barrier to increase the appearance of skin's overall elasticity and thickness. It nourishes and hydrates the skin to help minimize developing lines and wrinkles. It is odorless, non-greasy and non staining. Skin will appear more firm, smooth in texture and youthful. Feuilles de Tabac Eau de Parfum 50ml, Miller Harris. A sexy scent of rich woods, tobacco leaves, spices, Cuban cascarilla oil and pimento berries contrast with a cooling heart of pine needles and velvet sage whilst creamy tonka bean and Malay patchouli. Great for the guy who may be new to the world of fragrance - manly but more sophisticated than a lumberjack.

In Singapore get your Miller Harris here.

Have no sense when it comes to scents? Check out The Whale and The Rose - no nonsense on scents. *a wink & a groan*

Dermalogica Shave System  $35.00 USD at Ulta. Does your guy have skin? He needs skincare. If your man is face cream resistant, start with a gift catering to good skin disguised as a shaving kit then perhaps for his birthday you can give him the whole chi-bang including some fabulous eye cream. Baby steps for your big boy. *wink*

M?naji Skincare for Men Anti Shine High Definition Powder Vision $35.00 at Nordstrom I am not to sure if I should encourage makeup for men... My HB will never use it - although he did accidentally use my SPF tinted moisturizer and I didn't have the heart to tell him.  Apparently this "HDPVTM (High Definition Powder Vision) was developed for professional actors and news anchormen. Due to the improved picture clarity of high-definition television today, professional television male grooming demands flawless coverage; traditional 'pancake' makeup does not provide the desired look." Hmmm... I have never seen a news anchor who didn't look all caked up...

I bought this shirt for my HB when we were just dating from Bluenotes in Canada 7 years ago and it is still going strong! [probably because he refuses to wear it out in public] You can easily get a t-shirt made for the guy in your life for a fun stocking stuffer.

Fred Perry - Classic Overnight Bag (Black/Ecru) - Bags and Luggage $75.00$67.99 USD at Zappos for the hipster art director boyfriend type. Fill it with overnight basics for when he crashes at your pad.

Boconi Bags and Leather - Tyler Tumbled Plaid About You - Office Traveler (Black Leather) - Bags and Luggage  $548.00 USD at Zappos for the grownup BF or HB remind him that his backpack is so college and he gets to upgrade to big boy status.

Have a fabulous gift idea for the man in your life? Do share!!

If you are familiar with my hair & makeup work or know me you will know that for me to break out a powder is a feat. I just don't like the texture it gives the skin. It makes you look old. Women, in my opinion are oversold powder foundations more than Big Macs.

So when I say I have found a powder that I LOVE you know it has to be a good one. I'm a sucker for flash sale sites. I stalk the beauty links. Hautelook was having a flash sale on Stila.

With the description of the Illuminating Face Powder being:

"Let your inner radiance shine through with this unique, all-in-one powder foundation. Infused with Mica, tiny crystals found in nature, this unique formula helps reflect light for luminous skin that looks fresh and bright.Perfect for all skin types, illuminating powder foundation minimizes skin imperfections while maximizing sun protection with SPF 12 for ageless, timeless skin that simply glows. Apply dry for a light coverage or damp for more complete coverage."

I thought ok... I'll bite and buy a few. I always buy my shade so I can test it on my delicate Princess skin. Well... this powder has the Andrea Claire seal of approval and trust me that is HUGE!

stila 'illuminating' powder foundation SPF 12 $28.00 USD by Stila at Nordstrom Compact sold separately.

On the subject of powder...

Are you one of those ladies who reapplies all day because you think you are shiny?? Check your skincare. You may need a new routine or just try some blot film. Adding layers of powder truly ages you as it accentuates lines and you will look cakey. Apply your foundation once and then perhaps one t-zone touch-up, that's it!

Also bare in mind: over-powdering and even over-blotting will tell your oil glands that you need more oil and speed up the oil production process. Cut back powder and blotting and let your skin get back on track. True story.

RMK SS 2012 Collection

Hairstylists and makeup artists can be each others' worst clients; admittedly I have gone home after a cut and 'tweaked' it to my liking. I have even added on some liner here and there after a makeup session with fellow artists.

RMK invited me to check out their SS collections with Japanese makeup artist Toru Kobayashi.

Armed with a translator and an eyelash curler...

Mr Kobayashi showed me the collection while I was in his hot seat.

I was at ease with his manner and did not rush off to add more liner. I was pleasantly surprised. (or age is getting me to chill a little)

The S/S collection is all about 'Sprinkling Colors' inspired by the prisms created when water and sun align be it through the rain or the lawn sprinklers. The Sprinkling Eyes come in three shades: Brown, Green and Gray where you start with your creamy base colour and layer with one other colour from a choice of 3, depending on what combo you fancy. Soft and romantic, a perfect summer combo.

RMK is available at various counters - except in Canada and the US! [Why the heck not? It's a lovely line... Holt's? Saks? You should check it out]

Beauty Masks Inspired By Horror Films?

A huge 'Thanks' to myfaceworks for sending me a package of their masks to try all the way to Singapore from Vancouver, Canada!

This one I am wearing is the 'I need to detox'; a green tea based mask that is suitable for normal skin with oily tendancies. (I am experiencing my pms breakout, hopefully this helps)

I love the packaging.

This one is for the husbands. JK! Actually, this one is suitable for all skin types. Throwing this at the man won't get you off the hook; better to stick with the old: 'Got a headache Baby, sorry.'

Vitamin-C Radiance wakens and brightens the skin; pair with your morning cappuccino!

I think every parent can relate to needing to be firm. [Zoie is so darn cute though - hard to be firm]

This one I'll be using from now until the end of time!

I know, I need a pedi....

I like them as they are simple to use. First you cleanse your skin, then apply the mask sheet -15-20 minutes later... voila!

The ingredients do not interfere with makeup application like some creams do. If you are puffy, place your mask in the freezer 15 minutes before applying, the cold will help to de-puff!

Zoie and I both give MYFACEWORKS thumbs up.

This is Sage. Sage was going out to a schwanky birthday party and begged for a little help. (She had to beg as she can't afford my rates. Kidding. She's my daughter/model/aspiring singer - you may recognize her from her Nutella ads from 5 years ago that keeps running and running!)

I did a little 'twitpic' of this gorgeous daughter of mine and WOW! The response I had. Yes, thank you; she cleans up well. :)

GET THE LOOK:

After applying skincare, I placed Shadow Shields under her eyes which catches all the falling shadow.

Eyes

Lids: using a sponge-tip applicator, base with MAC Cosmetics Paint Pot in Blackground

Crease: staring straight into the mirror using the tip of a tapered contour brush for eyes, sweep a black shadow onto the crease. I used FACEatelier's Carbon eye shadow. TIP: Don't add a lot of pigment to your brush and keep the sweeping action going with a gentle hand as it will blend nicely!

Liner: I lined on top of the shadow with Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Gel Eyeliner in Black Ink. Apply with a bent liner brush. It's best not to close your eyes so you can get right at your lashline as well as to see the angle for a little winging action on your line.

Inner Corner: on the tearduct area apply a reflective white/silver shadow using a pencil-tip brush which gives a precise application with easy blendibility. I used YABY Cosmetics PP080

LITTLE KNOWN MAKEUP BRUSH TIP: If you hold your brush close to the tip, your application will be more heavy-handed than if you hold closer to the middle of the brush. Holding even further to the end of your brush you get a light-handed, better blended application; great for blush and bronzers too!

Finish your eye with your favourite mascara.

Skin

Foundation: none other than FACEatelier's Ultra Foundation in #1.

Cheeks: A layered combo of FACEatelier's Peach Glaze blush and Jemma Kidd's All Over Dewy Glow in Iced Gold.

Decolletage: I dusted Sage's collar bones and shoulders with MAC Cosmetics Mineralize Skinfinish in Shrimpagne. I believe this colour is no longer available as it was a special edition BUT these Mineralize Skinfinishes are quite nice,  reflective in nature. (reflective products are very flattering on everyone!)

 HAIR

I brushed Sage's hair straight back to just below her crown. Then, I back-brushed the snot out of it. I LOVE the Sephora Smoothing Hair Brush! It's great for combouts, detangling and.... for back-brushing the snot out of hair!

*I have many times over my career held a Mason Pearson brush, never buying it as I couldn't stomach $200 on a hair brush - especially after someone walked off with my $800 Kasho haircutting scissors, that I think I will NEVER get over. This Sephora brush is a whooping $48 US and WELL WORTH IT!

I then sprayed Sage's teased-out ponytail with a combo of Moroccanoil Hairspray and Joico's Humidity Blocker. The hairspray gets many compliments from models and celebs that I work on - the big plus? Scent! No one likes stinky hairspray; it smells nice AND has a great hold! Humidity blockers are just an added bonus to help keep high-hair volumized in humid weather.

OH! Here's Sage in her Nutella ad! Gotta LOVE YouTube!

Bazaar Beauty Judge

By Andrea Claire · August 4, 2010 · 0 Comments ·

I was recently asked to participate as a Beauty Judge for the Harper's Bazaar (Singapore) Beauty Awards, November issue (2010).

Being a hairstylist and makeup artist of 20 years, I pride myself in keeping up with the Beauty Joneses remaining current in my field. This includes reading up on ingredients, recommendations and testing out new products. As you can imagine, I, beauty geek, was honoured to be given this task!

Well, the magazine called to confirm that I was home to accept my boxed beauty bundle as the courier was about to leave their office; 20 minutes later my concierge rang up to my suite 'M'am, you have some hair product delivery. Shall I send it up?'

Ok.  First, hate being called 'M'am'.

Second. Some hair product??? This is not how I would have described it.

I opened the door to find the courier with a dolly full of crates!

I was a kid in my very own candy store! For roughly 6 weeks, donned in my inconspicuous labcoat (the fashion industry uniform: an LBD) my life was immersed in luxurious creams, lotions, gels, fragrances, masks, powders, pigments.... you name it - I tested it.

If this wasn't work related you would have had to do a Beauty Intervention ala SATC's Charlotte and the rabbit episode! And this felt probably as good - if not better!

Now, I don't feel its right to point out my favourites until the issue is out, (mark your calendars to purchase Bazaar, November 2010!) but from time to time I will post a breakdown of what beauty products I tested and the results I have found. (here's one) Some products I was amazed by in an 'if I hadn't seen the results myself, I would never have believed it' fashion. And, yes, yes, OH yes! I did see some ageing reversal from tubes at home.

I have... err.. HAD a shallow-ish wrinkle in-between my brow that was taken care of within 2 applications... no word of a lie.

Glamoxy Snake Serum

'This revolutionary oxygenated, viper-inspired serum contains syn-ake; a neuro peptide that mimics the effects of the Temple Viper's potent venom to instantly lift the face, freeze muscles and plump fine lines and wrinkles.'

Now, the key word here is 'mimics'. I don't like snakes unless they are on my feet. (I kid; illustrating that I don't like snakes - they give me the hee-bee-jee-bees.)

Check back to see what product had me looking like an organic beef-steak tomato.

Desired result or no? You be the judge - you know I was.

Makeup Brushes: care & cleaning

Email |
|
By Andrea Claire · April 22, 2010 · 0 Comments ·

A common question I am frequently asked is... How does one clean makeup brushes?

drum roll... Brush Cleaner! [or a gentle shampoo]

There are so many kinds out there. Simply using a mild shampoo works perfectly fine but for that extreme clean, brush cleaner is available from many cosmetic lines.

Some of the more 'quick dry' professional ones use a dry cleaner fluid so you need to be aware of what you are using. The pro-brands that dry quickly can also dry out your brushes causing them to wear quicker.

  1. Using tepid water get the bristles a wet.
  2. Swipe bristles gently back and forth in shampoo
  3. Rinse with the water flowing down off the tip of the bristles so as not to trap water into the base of the bristles
  4. Leave to dry hanging over a sink or counter edge
