Beauty Lust Haves: April

By Andrea Claire · April 2, 2013 · 0 Comments ·

Say it with me: Lust haves because I love them and you must have them!

Original Mineral Detox Shampoo and Conditioner set.
This combo is amazing for oily scalp, swimmers and anyone else who feels that their hair has build up - which should be D) all of the above. I bought this after conferring with my friends at O&M due to Stuff Zoie Says developing an unintentional shade of swimmer's mint blonde. Since I like to test everything on my hair I found that it gave my hair new life. I've been using it on my clients who have sinced raved that their hair feels 'like it did years ago' - tea tree is one the ingredients working magic here. If you don't have an oily scalp nor swim a lot, still consider this as an at home detox treatment once a week and trust me - you fine hair girls are going the love the new found body it gives you. Live in Singapore? Buy it here.

Let's kill two birds with one stone.

My HB [husband] went on a business trip and took with him some important steps to my skincare regimen - he's jealous and trying to sabotage me. I had some Skin Inc from an event swag bag that I forgot I had and the Kate Somerville eye cream I bought after sampling some of her other luxe creams.

Skin Inc - Skin Supplement Bar I had originally heard rave reviews from Mmerci Encore who at the time reigned the beauty dept at Harper's Bazaar Singapore. I was given their 'Daily Dose' then and loved it, but we shortly relocated to Austin Texas (2009) where Skin Inc was out of sight and therefore out of mind. I must have been out of my mind to let that happen. As per the pic, I have been using the Skin Inc Vitamin A and Placenta - not to worry Vegans! It's plant placenta! ...unless you're opposed to screaming carrots - I kid! I don't think it's carrots - maybe screaming aloe.
*Skin Inc ships worldwide!
[and ps - we relocated back to Singapore in 2010 - I love Singapore but I miss Austin, especially my house.]

Kate Somerville Line Release Under Eye Repair since my HB walked off with my Dermalogica I seized the opportunity to go shopping. I have been ageing fairly gracefully (minus the trucker mouth) so I am lucky in the lineage department but that doesn't mean to leave it up to nature. I love the velvety texture Kate's Line Release gives under my eyes and just like my coveted fave, concealer doesn't crease over this eye cream and your fine lines will diminish. Win/Win!

Kate's dual purpose tip: <em>Try putting a dab on the lip line to help soften lines, hydrate the area, and make lips look fuller and keep lipstick or gloss from bleeding into the lines.

</em>In one of my recent BellaBox monthly beauty deliveries was this little gem: Macadamia Natural Oil Healing Treatment. I love that it has a natural UV protector which is important in any climate for all hair types - chemically processed or not. Suitable whether your hair is fine or thick BUT fine hair proceed with caution and use sparingly. Put a few drops in your hands first, rub together and then apply on towel-dried hair to the mid-lengths, ends and then roots without adding more to your hands or hair.
<a target="_blank" href="http://bellabox.sg/macadamia-natural-oil-healing-oil-treatment.html"><em>

</em></a>*NOTE: 'Towel-dried' does not mean attack your hair like a crazy person with a towel. Best to gently wrap your hair to absorb excess water - roughly towel-drying causes friction lifting the cuticle causing breakage and flyaways - especially a bad method for curly or damaged hair.<a target="_blank" href="http://bellabox.sg/macadamia-natural-oil-healing-oil-treatment.html"><em>

</em></a>Another beauty subscription gem from the The Black Box Team in Singapore - Dr Jart's V7 VitaLaser (available in full sizes at Luxola) Again, it's about texture for me when it comes to skincare. This V7 VitaLaser is packed with vitamins to nourish the skin healing the after affects of acne and pigmentation while fighting the signs of ageing and protect against the elements including the evil UV rays. Fire the V7 [Vita]Lasers! It absorbs quickly and yes I can still feel it but it leaves my skin velvety smooth. Velvet skin textures + makeup = love.

*you got the Austin Powers reference - right? Yes? No? Moving on...

Tips for those who just can't stop picking their face

By Andrea Claire · March 4, 2013 · 0 Comments ·

Sure - us beauty experts say 'paws off your mug!' - but sometimes you just gotta squeeze that one zit or attack the army of blackheads. What you don't know is that you can make your skin from bad to worse as that one pesky pimple can multiply. The juicy insides of a pimple contains bacteria and when you squeeze it exploding all over your mirror, some of that can and probably will spread onto your face or a simple blackhead that you declog is now open to refill and if you aren't careful picking, prodding and poking can lead to scar tissue and/or infection.

  • Before touching your face always wash your hands first with soap and water - preferably fragrence-free soap because even a hint of fragrance on your fingers can be an irritant when squeezing a zit
  • Wash your face too. Clean fingers but dirty skin can still cause zits to multiply or become infected
  • After you are done poking, wash your hands and face again - this is a great time to apply Dermalogica's UltraCalming relief masque to soothe your skin
  • Know when to call in the experts. Underground pimples that are the size of Mt Olympus may need to be injected with dermatologist's magic

have some products to declutter your nose of unsightly blackheads and help control the oil.

The Skinmiso Pore Beauty Nose Pack is a multi-step blackhead removal that takes the old Biore nosestrips one step further - and a lot more effective from my opinion. I have tried both - if you have a blackhead problem you are going to LOVE Skinmiso.

Step 1 Remove blackheads and whiteheads with the first nose mask formulated with plant extracts.
Step 2 Contract pores with the second nose mask with ingredients such as witch hazel extract and keep skin moisturized with its patented materials.
Step 3 Control sebum and absorb oil keeping your skin smooth and dry.

For those blackheads playing hard to get you can give them a gentle push but careful! Although this Comedo Remover by SKINMISO has no sharp edges you need to handle with care. My mother had a Revlon blackhead pusher-outer-thingy when I was in high school that I almost shish-kebabbed my eyeball because my nose was too slick from oils - so trust me when I say -wash your face first! Gently press onto blackheads - don't force them - the stubborn ones will eventually come out. And wash your comedo tool with soap and water plus spray with rubbing alcohol before and after use.

SKINMISO is available through BellaBox.

New work! Thoi Gian (Vietnam)

By Andrea Claire · February 22, 2013 · 0 Comments ·

The Dream Team were back at it again for Thoi Gian (Vietnam)
Phototgrapher: Brendan Zhang
Styling: Furqan Saini
Art Direction: Nazri Razak
Hair, makeup & nails: Andrea Claire
Model: Flavia Corrente

You may laugh at the recognition that I styled the hair on this shoot but you can't ignore hair just because a model is lying in a pool - although - yes, not a high stress hair shoot.

The nails are Deborah Lippmann Magnetic Wave in Physical Attraction available in Singapore at Luxola

We shot this last year and as I said - a little difficult to track down the PDF or hard copy of the magazine. Brendan sent me the images. Sharing is caring.
Without having the actual tears means I don't have my credits for what I used - BUT (don't cha love a big but?) I have some consistency of what I use in my work:

Dermalogica - EVERYONE in my chair gets this before we begin makeup.

[say it with me] FACEatelier

NARS  The Multiple Stick in Lamu and layered with Copacabana for a highlight

[I am 99.9% sure I had used] Tom Ford Beauty eyeshadow quad in <a target="_blank" href="http://www.tomford.com/#/en/beauty"><strong>Silvered Topaz

</strong></a>Lips<a target="_blank" href="http://www.tomford.com/#/en/beauty"><strong>

</strong></a>Urgh. Totally forget... Sorry Dudettes - I was playing more with OCC Lip Tars (available in Singapore at BellaBox) at this time so it may be a Givenchy Lipliner (LOVE them) with a Lip Tar...<a target="_blank" href="http://www.facebook.com/pages/Andrea-Claire-celebrity-hair-makeup-artisthost/117705241587123"><strong>

Valentine's Day gift list for her

By Andrea Claire · February 4, 2013 · 0 Comments ·

Valentine's Day - the Hallmark holiday that pressures couples to prove their love and commitment to each other while guilting singles into commitment.

Valentine's Day Blos!
Why not give her the gift of a great blo job? A series of gift cards so the lady in your life has help getting ready on time for a change? Blo Blow Dry Bar opened in North America and creeping up globally - they say that they are opening in Asia... um... I live in Asia... a little more specific please... Asia is pretty big... [I realize that straight men won't be reading this blog on their own so just send them my link  with the subject: blo jobs - they'll read it.]

Absinthe makes the heart grow fonder
The Body Shop's new Absinthe Purifying Hand Care Range is great for the dirty girls to the germaphobes - it'll get their hands all clean and hydrated. I wouldn't leave the V Day gift as just this though - us ladies would love a gift basket full of The Body Shop goodies.

A gift that keeps on giving month after month - no - not herpes... a different kind of surprise in a box: Beauty subscriptions! BellaBox in Singpaore has their V-Day surprise ready to go. Order ASAP to get it for the 14th! In the US? Check out Allure's beauty subscription list.

Do you have an everlasting love for diamonds? The Destinée Les Couples ring by Lee Hwa Jewellery, made with18K rose gold and encrusted in dazzling round Destinée diamonds to symbolize inseparable love.

A Coral Flush: fresh Spring makeup

By Andrea Claire · January 5, 2013 · 0 Comments ·

Happy New Year! [It's the 5th so still ok to say this for 2 more days.]

Now that we got 2012 out of the way it's time to plan getting out of hibernation for our Spring makeup hauls! Living in Singapore makes it a little easier to visualize warmer weather makeup because it's tropical here and summer all year 'round. *bragger alert!*

Yesterday I was on set with Cosmo Singapore for a March fashion story - since it's not a beauty shoot I can show you the makeup that we were all loving! *pats self on back*

<a target="_blank" href="http://instagram.com/aclairebeauty">image source

</a>This is the lovely Oksana S with Upfront models Singapore. I predict, like a few other models that I have worked with recently, that she is going places.

On Oksana I used:

Let's start with the lips since that colour is gorgeous!

  1. I based her lip with Givenchy lip pencil #4. Givenchy has the best lip pencils on the market. The colours are lush and apply smoothly - zero tugging! I line and fill in so you don't end up with the harsh lip lined look which is very Soccer Mom *shudder*
  2. I then applied the OCC Lip Tar in Cha Cha. I have a love/hate with OCC Lip Tars. I find that they are a little messy - you have to use them extremely sparingly otherwise before they set the colour creeps into the teeth - but once they set OCC Lip Tar is going no where. I find they work great as a primer since anything you apply over top goes on like silk.
  3. I finished with FACE atelier's Lip Glaze in Paradise. Totally digging this combo.

Now we can rewind from the start:

Dermalogica - I know - quelle surprise! Everyone I doll up gets Dermalogica Skin Smoothing Cream [  [{$39.00 USD at Ulta] on their skin as it gives me that best skin texture to work with. The key to great makeup is the skin you are starting with and I find the smoothing cream helps in giving me a smooth base... can I use smooth one more time in a description? Urgh - can you say thesaurus?

Bobbi Brown BB Cream SPF 35- Light  $42.00 USD Barneys New York mixed with a little FACE atelier Ultra Foundation #1

Savoir Faire Concealer $46 SGD - I didn't use the powder - not a fan of powder under the eyes unless you are trying to look older - not many of us are... just the 15 year olds trying to get served.

On the lid I used a MAC colour that of course, is discontinued. sigh I have a habit of that - but you could use MAC Gorgeous Gold - that's close to what I used.

Soap & Glory Solar Powder £11.00 at Boots I used this both as an eye contour and a cheek contour.

I used Onyx (middle colour) top and bottom at the lash-line from the Bobbi Brown 'Extreme Party' Eye Palette (Nordstrom Exclusive) $75.00 USD at <a target="_new" href="http://www.shopstyle.com/browse?fl=r1">Nordstrom

At the brow bone and inner corner of the eye I used NARS Soft Touch Shadow Pencil in Hollywoodland $24.00 USD at Sephora

I filled in her brows with a Brunette MAC brow pencil from their new brow line which has recently launched! The Strawberry Blonde brow pencil is perfect for me so those who ask me in person if my hair is brown can stop... clearly I am a redhead - temper and all.

MAC 'In Extreme Dimension Lash' Mascara (Premiering at Nordstrom)  $20.00 USD  at Nordstrom I LOVE testing out new MAC products. This mascara is amazing - zero clumping, no smudging and holds a curl.

As I mentioned above - I had sculpted Oksana's cheeks with Soap & Glory's Solar Powder first.

MAC Powder Blush in Supercontinental $20.00 USD at Nordstrom with its satin finish it has a l<span>ight-refractive sheen-style finish adding subtle highlights to the skin - but I love a good highlight so I added more with two products - the NARS Miss Liberty and...

Jemma Kidd makeup School DEWY GLOW in Iced Gold £18.95  at Zalando - I have heard the rumour that Jemma Kidd is going under... anyone have the full scoop?? I hope that's not true but if you haven't added this to your beauty arsenal then hop to it Beauty Bunnies as this is a <strong>LUST HAVE.

TIP! </strong>Apply this FIRST before you add any powder product - you can layer the Dewy Glowy over powder but powder finishes will get a little disturbed so best to layer your creams and liquids together before your powder products.

Oksana's behind the scenes selfie. You can follow her on Instagram.

Holiday gift ideas for her (pt 2)

More gift ideas for the woman in your life saving you from a year of 'Why did you get me that vacuum cleaner? What the h-e-double hockey sticks were you thinking??' Or were you trying to tell her that she sucks?

Beauty Subscriptions

Just like Singapore's Vanity Trove or BellaBox, beauty subscriptions are a no-brainer. Every month a box of new beauty goodies arrive at the doorstep to be discovered. The deliveries have included trial sizes to full sizes and products such as OPI, Laura Mercier, Storyderm, Savoir Faire, OCC and more.

Refinery29 has a great roundup for the U.S

Give her specs appeal

Marc Jacobs

Alexander McQueen

For the eyewear addict and how fitting to get all glitzy for the season!  Trust me - there is such a thing as an eyewear addict... *fingers pointing at myself* {click that for a 2013 eyewear preview!

Acknowledge that she shops by buying her a wallet

I need a new wallet and this is the one I've been eyeballing. Hint to the HB. The snake embossed leather is a great texture but living in the tropics this may have me screaming every time I open my bag actually believing that a python slivered in so possibly deterring my desire to dig it out... anything to convince the HB that I need a Kate Spade wallet... Kate Spade New York Lacey Snake Embossed Leather Zip-Around Wallet  $228.00 USD at Saks Fifth Avenue I love the zip-around closure since I tend to jam everything in. It has an inside zip pocket with two compartments, twelve credit card slots and two bill compartments. Perfecto.

Chic Business Gal on the go!

Glam Silver Flap Card Holder $250.00 SGD at Swarovski, shines in silver metal calfskin with Crystal Silver Shade Mesh on the flap. The interior reveals one flat pocket, one window pocket, and one gusset pocket for business or credit cards.

Shower her with jewels

Erickson Beamon Crystal drop earrings, $256.00 SGD, available on TheOutnet.com

Erickson Beamon Gold-plated Swarovski crystal necklace
$443 SGD on TheOutnet.com

Um.... new found love... TheOutnet.com!! Net-a-Porter.com's outlet sister... where the hell have I been? And if you order now you should be ok for holiday gifts... International shipping!

'Hello my name is' Charm Jewelry

By Andrea Claire · April 2, 2012 · 0 Comments ·

A number of years ago I was in a thrift store and stumbled upon a 'Becky' charm necklace, not my name; I felt compelled to buy it... and wear it. I confused many who after years of working with me started calling me 'Becky'. Made for funny, awkward moments. I built up a story about a beloved family parrot (Becky) who flew the coop. [Apologies to those who believed me...]

Well, a lovely new version of 'Hello my name is' tagging recently popped up at an event I was at.

BellaBox was giving out name bracelets. Cute, non? They tell me that the place to find the DIY project bits is here.

Not the DIY type? You can order your name or someone else's through a few avenues.

Marc By Marc Jacobs MARC Logo Charm Necklace $88.00$61.00 at Bergdorf Goodman [If someone calls you 'Marc' feel free to use my parrot story.]

Image Isabelle Grace Jewelry

Super cute designs can be found at Isabelle Grace Jewelry and with Mother's Day around the corner, a personalized necklace is a nice touch to include with a gorgeous bouquet! They also have adorable bracelets for babies! [You can tell the twins apart via bracelets!]

Lisa Stewart Serenity Bracelet with Engraved Goldtone Monogram $195.00 at Max & Chloe

The Lisa Stewart serenity bracelet with engraved gold-tone monogram is a bold way to show off your initials. The brown leather cuff is the perfect backdrop for the central 18k gold vermeil plate detail that's engraved with the script monogram of your choice. This leather cuff has three snap closures that allow you to adjust the fit.

FAB GIFT IDEA!! A Beauty Subscription!

By Andrea Claire · December 19, 2011 · 0 Comments ·

Every month we girls have to endure pain and suffering - you know what I mean. A 4-7 day visit from Aunt Flo.

Why not something to look forward to each month that isn't full of cramps and bad things?

The latest craze is Beauty Subscriptions. You register online for a monthly box delivered that is packed full of the latest beauty products to try. AWESOME gift for your mother, wife, mistress, girlfriend, administrative assistant/ mistress...

I list a few countries below so read on...

BellaBox sent me their December beauty box o' treats... um... this would have cost me only $15.00??! [Note: that's in Singapore dollars]

Seriously?? I don't need to breakdown what's in this box as my fabulous photography shows it all minus the $50 gift certificate for Sothys Professional...

What is great about a monthly beauty subscription is that you can try the latest most coveted beauty products, delivered to your door. Most of the products are trial size so there is minimal waste if it's not for you, minimal amount of money spent at only $15!!! [Sorry, I'm having a hard time getting over how inexpensive it is!]

This December box is entitled Party In Style - and what perfect timing with the holiday season - fetes and soirees galore!

Eylure Naturalites 140, $5.99 USD by Eylure at Ulta in the U.S

The Eylure Intense lashes are lightweight but a little too intense. Not many women can carry these off - unless you are looking for drag queen lashes.I can use these on a fashion shoot. BellaBox does sell other styles on their site that are more wearable. Look here.

I LOVE the feel and the flavour of the Savoir Faire lipstick but the colour in this month's box, Miss You, is very frosty pink - a colour that I made my Aunt's stop wearing years ago. Not all is lost as you can layer this on-top of a 'blah' neutral colour to jazz it up. I would only recommend you wear Miss You alone if you are a true Swedish blonde, ya. I love the packaging. It reminds me of Burberry's lipsticks with the magnet in the base so your lid doesn't pop off in your bag. Genius.

Inside this box o' beauty I also found two tubes of the coveted OCC Lip Tars; which I had just ordered from Camera Ready Cosmetics not knowing that BellaBox sells them here* too... it's ok, the colours are different! Wahoo! I have heard that it's impossible to have samples of the Lip Tars so the tubes BellaBox sent are full size... um... $15 for the entire box!?! Application tip: This stuff goes a LONG way. When I first tried the red Lip Tar it went all over my teeth so I looked like I was a vampire that just had a meal. Apply sparingly.

SEPHORA by OPI Glimmer Wonderland Six Piece Mini Nail Colour Set.$22.00 USD at Sephora [Sephora OPI set available at Sephora not BellaBox]

The OPI Not Like The Movies nail polish in a mini bottle. Adorbs! I love these little bottles. Great for stocking stuffers too! Buy a package of minis and divide them up for little girl gifts.

Faust Awake Potion Awake Potion For Discerning Nightowls - aka a hangover helper perhaps? Perhaps. And more benefits too! You can buy more as needed on the BellaBox site.

For Beauty Subscriptions near you:

U.S: Birchbox

France: Jolie Box

Canada: Luxe Box

UK: GlossyBox

Singapore: BellaBox and Vanity Trove

*Here is Singapore. I live in Singapore. I am Canadian. Life is an adventure. :)
