I've said it before: I love a makeover; especially when I am in control. *wink*

Therese has a fabulous blog, articulate and interesting. We first met when I had a Twitter giveaway for MINX nails.

Therese popped by my petite studio for another go in the beauty hot-seat.

Luscious locks right? A hairstylist's dream to be given carte blanche. Thanks Therese!

With all the mirrors covered Therese could only guess how silly she looked at this point.

After cutting the perimeter and point-cutting her layers with my scissors I wanted to add a little texture with my razor.

NOTE: Don't shy away from a hairstylist's razor as the effect can be quite cool. I love it for added texture and volume for free-style hairstyles. You just need to make sure your stylist's razor is sharp otherwise your hair will split. I put in a new blade minutes before cutting Therese's hair. Need a middle-woman for your hairstylist? Take my tips with you.

The big reveal...

Ta da!!!

The colour breakdown: I put 2 shades of foils in her hair, cinnamon and dark mahogany; leaving the top of her hair and hairline her natural colour. Why? Her natural shade is beautiful. Asian hair has a tendency to absorb light without dimension so my goal was to create dimension and a low maintenance but fun style for her. Find more Asian hair colouring tips here.

Prepping for makeup. One of my favourite things that I have found in Singapore is this dohickey velcro hair thingy. It works great for keeping a fringe (bangs) swept out of the way without a clip mark left in the hair when you remove it. Beauty Geek loves these too!

Another fave of mine: Shadow Shields, they catch the eyeshadow fallout. I do have some for sale if you live in Singapore and want some. DM me for details.

The finished makeup.

What I used:

FACEatelier Ultra Foundation #5

Bobbi Brown Shimmer Brick in Nectar

Benefit Creaseless Cream Shadow in RSVP [I constantly give them love and no one from Benefit has ever tried to reach out to me so I mention them out of pure love for the product with zero industry perks. Translation: it's THAT good.]

A light brown Ben Nye eyeshadow in the crease or you can get Wedge by MAC Cosmetics, same thing.

Bobbi Brown Gel liner in Bronze

Mascara on top of Therese's beautifully permed lashes! OMG - totally seeking eyelash perming now... I WANT!

Lips were glossed with a bronzey-lipgloss I got in one of my BellaBox boxes. Beauty subscriptions are such a fab idea!

The new Therese!!

I blew out Therese's hair with a medium size round brush using Marc Anthony's [no, not the singer] Anti-Aging leave-in treatment and the Strictly Curls spray for loose bounce and waves.

We had soooo much fun. Click to see Therese's blog about her makeover experience.

Imagine the local fish market stall owner's surprise when I asked him for fish skin. I tried to explain that it was for a photoshoot.

Not sure where I come up with my ideas. Pretty sure it's either a) from tequila or b) sleepless thinking of shoots, beauty and art.

Clicking on the images above will give you clear makeup credits. I used a collection of YABY, MAC, Benefit, Shu Uemera, FACEatelier, Make Up For Ever, L'Oreal Paris, Kryolan and MINX nails.

Note: The pinkish/red nails were a MINX knock off I found in Far East Plaza in Singapore.

My favourite shot. I wrapped loads of coloured hair extensions around her ponytail. Easy peasy pretty.

Hard to see in my scans but the little detailing I did on the nails with MINX Nails

If you want to see the full story you'll have to head to a magazine rack and purchase it.

V-Day. Love it or hate it- there is no running from Cupid's bow unless he slaps your ass... seriously, this happened to me on a blind date.

Picture this: Girl/Boy [actually woman/man], blind date: Snowy park, icicles hanging from the trees, moonlit; taking a cute little dog for a walk.

Romantic right? Pffft, anything BUTT... My  'date' was walking so fast, I  called out sarcastically  'I apologize as I can't  seem to keep up with your pace.'

He stopped. Waited for me to catch up

and then...

Proceeded to smack my ass telling me that I could 'make it up to him later'! Seriously. It happened. So NOT kidding. Wish I was.

I left. I bet he is still single.

I can't tell you how to behave on a date. Hopefully the above anecdote will give some guys an idea of what NOT to do.

While you're at it, buy her a vacuum cleaner... [image shared via EpicMakeup's FB]

Beauty wise, I can help you out. Here are some tips to get you from A to V [Day].

In February our skin is rejuvenating from the dryness of winter, give a gentle helping hand in restoring the lustre and texture while evening out skin tone. Choose a base that has both coverage and healing qualities. Try Dermalogica’s Treatment Foundation. Apply with a foundation brush for an air-brushed quality skin.

Why not get NAKED! The coveted palette by Urban Decay can be used for all your beauty looks from sweet & innocent to trashy vixen to naughty secretary ... sorry I mean 'naughty administrative assistant'

As if getting NAKED the first time wasn't enough... NAKED 2. [PS Thanks U.D for your invite to your recent artist event here in Singapore... Oops! I mean 'not'... I give you loads of love and you show nothing in return. Oh, well. I try to show unconditional love...]

Save water, shower with a friend! Whether rekindling the fire, on a first date set or after a successful date *wink* get luxurious tangible skin with The Body Shop Chocomania collection, from body scrubs to shower gels to body butters. With a universal appeal, chocolate tempts and tantalizes the senses.

Before you pucker up, lacquer up. Date night is a great night to get all dolled up, whether with an old or new flame; just remember – unless you are dating Joe Dirt, eat like a lady and choose your meal wisely. If you are wearing dark lip colors avoid the rack of ribs. The grease in the ribs will break down your makeup causing it to smear and bleed. Try NARS Velvet Gloss Lip Pencils

Today there is more focus in the manicure department. Women are more than ever seeing nails as an accessory that is the perfect polishing to any outfit. You can opt for a simple manicure or why not ask you nail tech for the latest ½ moon manicure done in contrasting colors? A pink ½ moon finished with red or a MINX manicure in Red Cheetah or metallic hearts on red (shown).

Need a gift idea? This is a MUST see. All you need is a pair of his underwear and your face. Never bored with the artofdoingstuff

Best Nail Products 2011

Sorry, this post was lagging behind my best hair, makeup and skincare posts. I've been a busy girl.

As we know from the abundance of press out there on nail appliques, polishes, nail extensions - nails are the new must-have to be done detail; but the game stakes are higher. French tips are passe, 1/2 moons and DIY nail art are here to stay.

This brings me to my Top 10 faves for you to nail it!

MINX nails. These nail coverings essentially shrink wrap with heat to your nails lasting 4+ days. [the image I did not do, if you know who the credit should be let me know, my nail portfolio work here] They have to be done by a trained nail tech which you can find one near you on the Minx website.

Sally Hansen Salon Effects Real Nail Polish Strips Tattoo Much $9.99 at Walgreens. I used these in denim for Seventeen (Singapore). These are amaze-balls! So easy to d.i.y and they remove with nail polish remover.

Both Sally Hansen Nail Strips and MINX have zero drying time which means no risk of smudging. Great for events! MINX will NOT chip. I don't know if the same can be said for the Sally Hansen strips; comment below if you know!

Sally Hansen Complete Salon Manicure Nail Polish, Gray By Gray $6.99 at drugstore.com

The brush for this polish is tapered and flat. I love it. It's easy to use and the taper allows you to get close to the nail edges without painting your entire fingertip like a spaz.

Deborah Lippmann Ruby Red Slippers Nail Lacquer $16.00 at CUSP. Deborah Lippmann's glitter polish is hands-down the best. It layers very well. I used this on some lovely talons for Alexis magazine.

OPI Classic Shades Nail Lacquer, Manicurist of Seville $8.50$8.00 at drugstore.com. A fave with everyone, but I really think that it is the colour choice that makes it a fave - and yes the polish is fab and wears well. I just know MANY people - nail techs and not, who complain about the thick brush they have. It's a pain in the ass.

CHANEL Le Vernis Nail Colour $26.00 at CUSP I LOVE CHANEL nail polish. It applies with ease and lasts longer on the nail then OPI, I wish they had more colours.

(Sorry OPI - I don't mean to give you a hard time. You obviously are doing something right. ;) )

Essie Quick-EDrying Drops $14.95 at Ulta Quick dry penetrates the polish to speed up the drying time for polish. This quick dry also has silicone in it to help protect the polish as it dries which will also add smoothness to the cuticle.

Wild Rose Targeted Hand Oil $12.00 at The Body Shop. Our poor hands are often forgotten in our skincare regimen. You can Botox and cream the crap outta your face but if you neglect your hands you will still show your age, Grandma. Little tip from me to you,

Dermalogica Multivitamin Hand And Nail Treatment $24.00 at drugstore.com. Everyone by now I'm sure knows my love for Dermalogica; maybe even they are tired of me raving about them? This hand & nail treatment does it all from re-hydrating to protection, SPF 15!!

Konad nail stamping kits. I discovered these nail stamping kits in Singapore. I used them on the shoot for the Orphan project on our Geisha. Alas, the framing was such that you didn't see the detail but they are very cool.

I'm all for the nail detailing but... this is a little much.

**Note: All prices in this blog are in U.S dollars. I am not American and I live in Singapore - oh...and I'm Canadian.

Colour Blocking Nail Trends

By Andrea Claire · November 17, 2011 · 0 Comments ·

This weekend, Hong Kong proved to represent exactly how small our world is:

I ran into the ladies behind MINX nails in Times Square. [Sorry New York, you are not the only ones]

Correction: we walked by each other and when I realized it, they were too far for me to call out to them without sounding like a crazy person.

Well, the wonderful world of Twitter closes the gap. I tweeted. They replied. We hooked up. [Not in that way]

Dawn and Janice were jam packed with meetings and launches but still managed to fit me in for 15 minutes. We met at 10/10 SPACE on Paterson Street.

10/10 SPACE invited my daughter (Sage) and I back the next day for a complimentary MINX manicure which I topped up with a pedicure for us too.

The latest pedicure craze in HK I'm told: colour blocking. Cool, non? These colours are by USLU Airline collection.

What else is cool: their iSpa pedicure chairs! See Sage get a pedicure. See Sage surf the internet. Sage is happy.

The iSpa has a massage chair built-in. Sage wasn't a fan of the massage. I liked it. The seats heat up too!

After the pedicure we moved over to the MINX mani station... where they gave us iPads to putter with whilst we mani'ed. Wicked iDea. ;)

I continued on with the fashion at my fingertips with colour blocking my manicure too. Ocean Green Chrome and Electric Eel, both MINX.

Thoughts? Colour blocking your nails: Yay or Nay?

**Check out my manicure portfolio here and watch for the next issue of ALEXIS magazine for a fab beauty shoot where I used three sets of MINX nails.

DIY Heart Moon Manicure

|
By Andrea Claire · January 12, 2011 · 0 Comments ·

One thing I can say for sure is that I am a romantic! Valentine's Day is approaching and being a chocoholic Pisces, I say commercialized prezzies?  BRING IT!

Recently I got a 1/2 moon manicure for the 1st time! LOVED. It got me to thinking. I know - something I shouldn't do.

If you can do contrasting colours in 1/2 moon manis then the world is your oyster!

Behold the Heart Moon Mani! (Yup - I did the marble mani too.)

Step 1: Cut a hole in the box... oops - no that's something else *wink*

I wanted more a Barbie pink but did not have it on hand - pun intended.

Tools used: Creative Nail Design Sticky Base Coat (which helps for a loner lasting polish), China Glaze Pink Voltage , OPI Big Apple Red and synthetic brushes for nail art. (If you can't find nail art brushes you can use kids paint brushes found at the Dollarama - cheap and cheerful)

Write a 'V to get the heart shape' - the polish actually rounds itself out so fairly easy to do.

The hard thing is keeping the lines sharp so the heart shape is distinctive.

I played with the red application. The problem with using the brushes that are with the nail polishes is that they are too thick and wide for detail work.

I found tracing the red around the heart with a nail art brush and then continuing with the original polish brush best. You could also pour a bit of polish onto plates to work from.

This was my first and only attempt - not bad.Personally, I am too old for this so Kids: Do try this at home and tell your mothers not to. :)

For the moms like me who are too old for the heart mani. :)

Although not DIY: MINX has some great Valentine's themed selections
