Online Shopping Sales: Go from 'I Love You' to 'Is That New' in one click

The three words  my husband used to say daily were "I love you"; now they have changed to "Is that new?"

Hm. Define 'NEW'. There's always a loophole. [ie. This new? Naaah, 2 weeks old.]

"Friends don't let friends pay retail!"  HauteLook

Um. Yes. I may have a problem but I work it out in [retail] therapy.

When I was living in Austin, Texas I discovered the addicting HauteLook. I purchased many things via sales here - from cosmetics to clothing to even steaks!!

As a hair & makeup artist I found the deals on cosmetics from prestigious lines a steal! Kevyn Aucoin Beauty - thanks for being on HauteLook Beauty!

Now that I am in Singapore I have been introduced to SingSale.

My first purchase was a dress and a jumper by Philippine-born designer, Pia Gladys Perey; click her - nice stuff!

From Ms Perey's Fall/Winter Collection 2010

Then there's Reebonz, (which has an international link too) or the new ReebonzCity which unveils spa treatments, workout classes and other lifestyle goodies.

Best Buy World (BBCosme) is a site that has deals on beauty products. Quite frankly, their site is confusing but if you persevere you too will find treasures! I just shop here for the beauty, which many are in bulk tester sizes so you have instant travel sizes of your fave creams. [Often you will find SKII and other high-end brands here]

There are so many others, RueLaLa, Ivory Trunk - the list goes on and on. These designer flash sales with mind-blowing stock, will get your VISA working in hyper-drive. [For another great write up on these sales click Her Campus]

With the ever-growing popularity of online shopping SALE is a four-letter word you will find yourself exclaiming more-so over than the other four-letter word when your VISA bill arrives.

PS: Honestly - there is no more need to buy retail. Retail is for the unseasoned.

Teen Beauty Blunders

In today's world being a teenage girl is harder than ever. The competition between girls at school no longer stops there. With Facebook Frenemies (inner monologue: honesty box is a huge irresponsibility from the creators) - social media has taken Mean Girls to the next level.

Why not turn it around? Empower yourself. Extingusih the negative. Embrace the positive.

Inspire from your favourite celebrity model or actress; we always will. But bear in mind these cool girls are loaded with stylists, makeup artists and retouching at hand to keep their image beyond perfect, without beauty blunders.

Since the general public aren't loaded up with their own beauty team here are a few common beauty mistakes teens make and how to fix them.

BROWS. Addicted to the tweezer? Time and time again we see over-tweezed, misshapen brows. Brows should not look like commas or expose the brow bone or stop immediately after the arch or...  over time too much tweezing can shock the roots causing the brows to not grow back.

Fix-it: STOP! Put your tweezers down and run away from them. The more tweezing on a misshapen brow the worse it looks. There is help available for you:

  • Browhaus has a semi-permanent tattoo service that allows you the time to grow your brows in without the maintenance of filling them in every day (avoid permanent tattoo makeup)
  • Seek a Pro 'Brow Architect' in your area. Magazines often cover best brows and how to get them. Not every waxer knows how to do a great brow.
  • Pick up a brow kit that includes brow colour, stencils and thorough instructions.Try Anastasia Kit for Perfect Brows and Eyes (pictured)  or Too Faced Brow Envy Kit

Foundation. Cake Face? Too much foundation be it in powder form or liquid is not necessary and does not look good either. If you are covering up skin eruptions go to a dermatologist as too much makeup can aggravate your skin causing more issues and this could lead to dullness and scarring. Powder makes me shudder. I never recommend it unless it's for a special function. (a quick dusting for setting your makeup is all you need) If you are thinking 'But Andrea, I am really oily and need powder.' A select few will need it BUT - your oily skin will oxidize changing the makeup tones throughout the day. *Excessive skin issues = Dermatologist visit.

Fix-it: Start by mixing an oil-free moisturizer with your liquid foundation before application which gives you an instant tinted moisturizer. If coverage is what you are going for use a foundation that is a known favourite with makeup artists. FACEatelier Ultra Foundation (pictured) or Kevyn Aucoin The Liquid Airbrush Foundation

DIY Haircuts & Colours I know it looks easy, but speaking as a licenced hairstylist for ...uh,  a really long time.... it's not, we just make it look cool and easy. If you feel compelled to cut your hair, aside from telling you to resist the urge, if you are possessed by the scissor devil, think: less it more. Colours, my Love, is a whole different ballgame.

Fix-it: Haircuts - If you have really made a mess of your hair you will need to make an appointment to get it fixed.  Too choppy? Soften the ends by cutting into the hard edge with the points of your scissors, point cutting. Never cut your hair with a lot of tension as hair has movement and cowlicks and pulling down too tightly will cause the hair to spring up in different lengths.

Colour- First rule: COLOUR WON'T LIFT COLOUR. What does this mean? Well, if you decide to colour your hair dark brown then in a month you think blonde seems like a fun idea, it won't happen. You will end up a colour-cross between a Calico kitten and some Japanimation character - your roots (where your natural colour is) will lift, the mid-lengths and ends may or may not lift, but if it lifts it won't be even and it won't be pretty. The only way to remove artificial colour for a drastic colour change is in the salon as a professional will have to strip out your colour. This multi-chemical processing is harsh on your hair and will damage it.

Fix-it:  So, you didn't listen to your mother and you are now purring like a Japanimation Calico. You can get a semi-permanent hair colour from the pharmacy to temporarily fix your colour. Avoid trying to fix with a permanent colour as it can only get worse. Semi-colours stain the hair and therefore are your best bet to even out a fresh 'oops'. Try L'Oreal's Healthy Look (pictured) Not confident in your DIY skills? You can always call in the professionals.
