A 12 year old boy is mastering the art of hair

By Andrea Claire · February 22, 2015 · 0 Comments ·

From Minipops to the Mouseketeers to artists to mathematicians; there has always been a select few child prodigies, the younger generation of talent whether in music, tv, artists or scholars.

"child prodigy is a person who, at an early age, develops one or more skills at a level far beyond the norm for their age. A prodigy has to be a child, or at least younger than 18 years, who is performing at the level of a highly trained adult in a very demanding field of endeavour." via Wikipedia

Let me introduce you to one child I stumbled upon in my search feed on Instagram. Adam known as Hair by Adam, is a 12 year old boy.</p>

Serious WOW factor here... let's take a moment and clap. He's 12...

Someone on Ellen's staff needs to get on this story now.

And let's add a clap and standing ovation to Sophia, a British hairstylist who has been mentoring Adam. She may just be helping the next Sassoon to hone his skills.

Just as Kevin Spacey has said:

Read about what I do here to send the elevator back down and please feel free to share what you do/did or others that you know in the comments below.

#howto: HEART UPDO?! Yes please! For Valentine's Day, bride or heck, Red Carpet!

By Andrea Claire · February 7, 2015 · 0 Comments ·

This is what hairstylists do when they are bored and are recovering from surgery: balance a mannequin onto their walkers and create.

I'm sure someone has done this before although I've never seen it, there is no such thing as an original idea anymore...One night, as I was drifting to sleep I visualized this (probably morphine-induced) and woke up craving a head of hair to play with.

How-to do the 'do:

  1. Curl hair with your fave method (tongs, hot rollers or as I did: GHD)
  2. Tease the roots from the front section (ear to ear) of the hair
  3.  Gently comb back the front section to just below the crown in a reverse vintage Snooki *wink*, twist and cross lock your pins creating a seam
  4. Divide the rest of the  hair as if you were doing low Mary-Ann ponytails, but don't tie them off.
  5. Take each section and roll into a flexible hair rat, foam or wrap up pinning just underneath, securing to the scalp. Leave out any tendrils or wispies as you like as you roll up the sections.

*Try your best to pin without leaving a trial of unsightly bobby / hair pins. Unless there are intentionally visible they look awful.

BEST hairspray ever: O&M Original Queenie Spray $25.95 USD at SpaceNK

**When smoothing fly-a-way hairs (I did not do that here), aim your hairspray down the hair shaft vs spraying up or into the hair which just adds more. A little deconstruction is fine if you like that; my only suggestions is to spray the 'halo' area of the hair smooth as then it just looks messy vs intentional - otherwise it's preference really.

SARAHPOTEMPA 'The Wrap Up' Hair Styling Sponge $12.00 at Nordstrom

***Hair rats can be homemade; store bought; or if you know how to properly tease (in steps for easier brushing out with zero breakage), you can create enough build and stability with yours or your clients own hair to create the shape.

I love hair sculpture! This is some of my work; I'm sure that top right is recognizable to many of you. The bottom left basket weave is a behind the scenes with photographer Scott Woodward on a project out soon. The rose bun was fun to try and unexpectedly easy, but take that with a grain of salt because I've been doing hair for 25 years now (I'm 43, not as old as the surgery would imply). I'd love to shoot a hair sculpture shoot so if any photographers / magazines want to collaborate hit me up here! I can return to work in 2 months.

Review || Eumora Soap Bar, is it worth the hefty price tag?

By Andrea Claire · September 1, 2014 · 0 Comments ·
</p> <p>Eumora soap bar sells a package of 4 for $179 Singapore dollars.
I know what you're thinking. Pears glycerin soap is about $1.79 per bar. Run to the pharmacy and call it a day? Why is Eumora so special?
Disodiumlauryl Sulfosuccinate & Sodium Coco-Sulfate & Triticum Vulgare (Wheat) Starch & 1-Octadecamol & Parafin & C17789, Heilmoor Clay, Water, Olea Fruit Oil, Chamomillia Matricaria (Chamomile) Extract, Olive Oil, Isopropyl Myristate, Aqua & Glycerin & Algae Extract & Polglucoronic Acid.
If that's all Greek to you:

Disodiumlauryl Sulfosuccinate is a de-greasing, emulsifier, and foaming agent used in many shampoos and other beauty cleansing products. The molecules are larger and cannot penetrate the skin therefore it is considered to be gentle, even on sensitive skin.

Heilmoor Clay; honestly I found mixed reviews on the web but I only look at professional views. The most common theme was that the clay was healing and mattifying. Healing and mattifying qualities are what you need for those suffering from acne and/or oily skin. I, however, have sensitive skin that can be reactive when I try new products. This Eumora bar... Nothing but good vibes! I feel at times a bubbling sensation that reminds me of the oxygen facial that Madonna loves.</p>

They do say that the bar can replace all of your beauty products as it's an all-in-one. Claiming: cleansing, brightening, healing, lightens eye bags, lifting and firming. I do still use some of my regular products but this has been my cleanser for a while now.

If you want to look up the rest of the ingredients Paula's Choice is a great place to start and don't forget about the must-have Think Dirty beauty app!

This is me after I washed my hair with the Eumora Spa bar, different than the Eumora Soap bar. I am not an oopma-loompa, it's my crappy lighting and if I fixed the colors with my junior editing skills my red hair looked like the unred. ;)

This is is me day 2 of NOT washing it again taken with window light. I was able to curl it and create fabulous volume with my hair. I know you're thinking 'what is this sorcery from a veteran hairstylist?!' But you can drop the sarcasm.

Since living in Singapore for the past 6 out of 7 years living abroad, I've been forced to shampoo daily - which I hate. Shampooing daily strips your natural oils from your scalp and hair therefore, your scalp can get irritated, your hair can get dry, and in some cases frizzy. You are forced to blowdry your hair otherwise the humidity will get to it and your hair will appear lifeless. Is this you and your hair? I'm telling you, for the sake of fabulous hair, you NEED this Eumora Spa bar. When the Eumora people wanted to send me their products for review I said that  I review things honestly. They encouraged it.

Clearly they know their products are amazing. No word of a lie, it's that good. I can go days without washing my hair - which I prefer for hair health, my scalp is no longer irritated and any hairfall has been minimized and if that can be said by a licensed hairstylist of 25 years, you know it's worth the price of $189 for a package of 4 bars. Told ya there's a hefty price tag. Go on, you're worth it!

<p>UPDATE: Eumora will be launching a sampling program watch for it here.

#fightthefrizz || humidity and your hair

By Andrea Claire · May 13, 2014 · 0 Comments ·

I know from personal experience as a Canadian hairstylist living in Singapore, that the frizz can be a chic hair killer and hey, if Posh is dealing with hair stress here on her tour you can bet many of you empathize. It took me a while to come up with my must-have solutions for the models and celebrities that I work on here, as well as my private clients. As we all know, I love to share the beauty knowledge saving the world from one bad hair day to the next so #fightthefrizz with these products:

Top left: VO5 oil treatments, an old school classic that I bought on a trip to Oz years ago more out of nostalgia because my mother and I used to use them. In trade school they claim that they are a no-no but honestly, I love the results. Sure, they may build up on the hair shaft but that's what clarifying shampoos are for.

MoroccanOil Light is amazing! It doesn't coat or weigh the hair down like leave-in conditioners do. Apply it pre & post-styling as well as before you go to bed. A little dab will do ya. I use this on #stuffzoiesays for her fine, blonde locks to have shape without frizz.

Bottom left of top image: Original Mineral Original Queenie, a session stylist's BFF especially in humidity. I used this on a drizzly evening shooting a Pioneer car stereo ad. It was love at first spritz.

<span class="text_exposed_show">All the way from NYC Jonathan IB Shield found it's way into my stylist kit when I was in the US and saved the day when I shot a Clear Shampoo ad outside in Singapore.

Those keratin treatments...? Well, yes - they do work, but they are still considered a chemical service and too many in a year can cause breakage. Being the anti-hairstylist that I am, consider DIY'ing with Marc Anthony Bye Bye Frizz. It's 30-day formulation has a short-term commitment with a long-term gain. Why long-term gain? Less harsh than a salon keratin treatment. I tried it. Works like a charm.

Did you know that keratin naturally occurs in your hair and nails?  I used to work for an Aveda salon way back in the day (1991-93) and Aveda had this lovely deep treatment called: Curressence. It was amazing BUT only if your hair was damaged. You see, damaged hair requires protein (keratin)  to rebuild and protein bonds are heavy so once you get hair to the repaired state you need to stop the protein or it will break. Laywoman's terms.</span>

Other tips for frizz fighting success:

  • blowdry with ceramic tools (brushes, blowdryer etc)
  •  use products; it is a must. If you don't use hair product don't complain about the frizz or lack of shape
  •  blowdry all the way - leaving any amount of dampness in the hair will encourage the frizz to comeback with a vengeance
  • don't over-style or over-wash hair when dealing with frizzy hair as you'll just make it worse.
  •  out of your element? If you are traveling, find a salon that specializes in blowouts since they are in the know of how to handle your hair in their environment. Blow + Bar is one that I know of (yet to try) in Singapore.

Want the Red Carpet service? Ms VB has her Glam Squad and you can too. Someone like me can come to your hotel to give you a blowout and even makeup if you need. Princess for a day vs Posh for life.

#AZMondayMakeover || Teresa, SKY Pilates

By Andrea Claire · May 12, 2014 · 0 Comments ·

BAM! Come hither...

Good Morning this Monday Makeover Day! The day after Mother's Day; and how fitting - we have Teresa, mother of one who has gone from frumpy housewife to MILF. No, she was never frumpy, nor is she a housewife; we were all just joking around.

Teresa Woo is the founder of Sky Pilates.

Watch the transformation and our cheeky selves in the video below.

[If you don't see the video here, please refresh the post title to load it]

A little repeat cuz she looks AMAZING! No Photoshop ladies!
The beauty breakdown:

As always, the Andrea Claire broken record: I started with  Dermalogica Skin Smoothing Cream $41.00 USD by Dermalogica at Ulta

Choosing a primer with some light reflective pigments diffuses fine lines and other skin imperfections. I used NARS Light Optimizing Primer Broad Spectrum SPF 15 $34.00 USD at Barneys New York

The new NARS Matte Multiple Multi-Use Colour can be used for Lips & Cheeks $39.00 USD at Neiman Marcus. I also love the neutral shades for sculpting. Just swipe directly to areas like your cheek hollows and blend with foundation. I like to apply these along with foundation when sculpting, not as a separate step - this ensures that you don't end up using too many layers of makeup. Say no to cake face.

Bobbi Brown Skin Foundation Stick $44.00 USD at Neiman Marcus is available in 24 shades. The updated formulation is seamless and weightless giving you that perfect skin appearance. I LOVE this new formulation.

I prefer to apply the Bobbi Brown Pot Rouge $26.00 USD at Neiman Marcus along with the foundation and multiple stick prior to any finishing/setting powder. Simple makeup rule: APPLY LIKE TEXTURES TOGETHER. Sorry for shouting but sometimes you ladies need to be yelled at. I'm talking to YOU pink-frosty lipstick wearers, it's way past the time for an update!

My favourite matte multi and pot rouge combo tends to be: NARS ALTAI with Bobbi Brown Powder Pink; the same combo that I used here on Teresa.

Pearl, mica and Zinc adds to this oil-free Mineral Finishing Powder by Laura Mercier, $34.00 USD at Neiman Marcus. Because of the zinc, it does have a natural SPF but don't let that replace your regular SPF. A favourite of my friend and ex-assistant cum fellow artist, Dee Daly who shared this with me, knowing how little I like powders. Thanks Dee! LOVE this stuff!

Another Andrea Claire broken record beauty staple: Benefit Cosmetics Creaseless Cream Shadow $20.00 USD at Ulta. I use and tell everyone to get Birthday Suit (colour not as shown); a champagne hue that suits everyone.

I used the top right colour from the NARSissist Eyeshadow Palette 1 ea on Teresa's eyeshadow cocktail. Get this limited edition palette while (and if) you still can!

Also in the cocktail is Tom Ford Beauty Eye Color Quad, Orchid Haze $78.00 USD at Neiman Marcus. If you like eyeshadow, you need to own Tom Ford's. I have about six. They are lush and easy to blend. See Orchid Haze on another eye that I did here.

I used Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Eye Pencil in Mahogany at the lash line and in the waterline. These pencils are Bobbi's gel liners now in pencil form and a must-have. Her gel liners are on my fave list.

SEPHORA COLLECTION Upside Down Mascara $22.00 USD at Sephora - the CRAZIEST looking mascara wand to date, but I love it. The wand ensures coverage all around the lashes. I do find this formulation a little tar-y and cake-y so keep your Tweezerman iLashComb handy.

Bobbi Brown Lip Liner in Pink Mauve $22.00 USD at Neiman Marcus

Another you have to have it, NARS Lip Lacquer in Chelsea Girls, $25.00 USD at Saks Fifth Avenue. These NARS lip lacquers are a must.

Kicking it old skool with Teresa's hair, I dug out my Velcro rollers. They are great for movement with the hair. I prefer to flat iron hair first, which helps to smooth the cuticle. I show you the proper way in the video above.

GHD Gold Professional 1" Styler - US 2-pin plug $225.00 USD at <a href="http://www.shopstyle.com/browse?fl=r27&pid=popsugar&pdata=354512" target="_new">NET-A-PORTER.COM

Conair® Think Big® Self Grip Velcro Rollers - 9 Count $8.99 USD at Target

Finish the hair with a spray of Original & Mineral Original Queenie hair spray. Andrea Claire's broken record beauty must-have. It has old skool hold without the old skool flakes and build-up.

Why #azMondayMakeover? Our industry does have an element of fantasy, especially when we are using 17-21 year old models in campaigns targeting the 30+. I will never stop participating in the fantasy side of fashion and beauty but reality isn't so bad either.

The call-out: Want to participate? We want YOU too!! The deal is: we get to play and post and you get a nice pic or 2 and some lovely tips. We are in the talks of sponsorship so if that works out maybe you'll get a goodie bag too  - but don't quote me on it.

VLOG || #AZMondayMakeover: Vivian Pei

By Andrea Claire · October 14, 2013 · 0 Comments ·

Welcome to week three of the AZMondayMakeover! You can recap the first two here.

There is a video above here. Don't see it? Please click on the post title.

Today's lovely lady is Vivian Pei. Vivian is a whiz in the kitchen. No really. She has an F&B consultancy business, does recipe development, teaches cooking, food stylist, organizes food tours.... Viv - am I leaving anything out?

before and after photos by Zurina Bryant

Now Vivian's before looks way more frazzled than one would expect. In all fairness she did just arrive after a frantic day of work and errands and we plunked her down without any real warning for her pic. (I don't even think she glanced in a mirror upon arrival) We let her open a bottle of champagne prior to sitting into my beauty chair - hey, we can be nice!

On Vivian I used:

Prep + Prime BB Beauty Balm Compact SPF 30 in Medium Plus $30.00 USD at M·A·C mainly under the eyes for added brightening.

Followed by FACEatelier foundation in #7 (Tan)

Benefit fakeup hydrating crease-control concealer, medium $24.00 USD at Macy's

Laura Mercier Mineral Finishing Powder $34.00 USD at Nordstrom

Too Faced Chocolate Soleil Matte Bronzing Powder $30.00 USD at Ulta

NARS 'Pro Prime' Smudgeproof Eyeshadow Base $24.00 USD at Nordstrom

This eyeshadow primer is clear and allows a smooth base for shadow. I applied it from lash line to brow bone.

Benefit creaseless cream eyeshadow in R.S.V.P, $20.00 USD at Macy's

Applied solely on Vivian's lid.

Laura Mercier Lustre Eye Colour USD at Nordstrom

With Vivian's eyes open, I applied LM Lustre Eye Colour in African Violet into the crease - pretty sure the image is of Chocolate and not African Violet but it shows the same shimmery quality.

Maybelline EyeStudio Baked Color Pearls Marbleized Eyeshadow Persuasive Plum $6.79 USD at Walgreens

I applied a sheer layer of this marbleized eyeshadow. I love these shadows! The way they pick up light is pretty and Hello! Cheap and cheerful!!

Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Gel Eyeliner $23.00 USD at Macy's

I used a deep plum / black that is no longer available. Sorry Dudettes.

Lip Lacquer $25.00 USD at NARS Cosmetics

I applied foundation onto Vivian's lips which isn't necessary - and after hearing what Vivian had to say (watch the video) about her lips I wish i hadn't chosen to take them down so much but she still pulls off this look nicely and hey - it's not a lip tattoo. ;)

<strong>For Vivian's hair:

I blew out Vivian's hair with Marc Anthony bye bye frizz blowout cream, tonged in some waves, pinned one side back and then set the final look with Original Mineral Original Queenie.

CHI Air Tex Tourmaline Ceramic 1" Curling Iron-Red $60.00 at jcpenney

I gave Vivian what I have dubbed as 'The Hollywood Mullet' (sleek on one side; sexy, wavy party on the other)

This is the CHI iron closest to what I could find to my vintage CHI with the Marcel arm. sigh I m not a fan of the wands nor the spring armed irons.

Let's talk about Vivian's dress by Lion Earl! I freakin' love this Singaporean label (I have yet to own one). Jewellery supplied by Singapore-based Killari.

VLOG || #AZMondayMakeover: Nadia Daeng

By Andrea Claire · October 7, 2013 · 0 Comments ·

Nadia Daeng, freelance PR-ista (kinda like fashionista but for PR)

Busy Bee Nadia D has a passion for red; her favourite colour. Of course I had to resist the urge to give her a red lip.

<span style="font-size: medium;" size="3"><span style="font-family: Calibri;" face="Calibri">(If you don't see a video below here - please refresh the title.)

Moroccanoil Medium Ceramic Round Brush 35mm A$25.50A$23.50 at Catwalk
<span style="font-size: medium;" size="3"><span style="font-family: Calibri;" face="Calibri">
Nadia's hair was blown out using a medium round brush, Original & Mineral Rootalicious on Nadia’s roots for added root lift and Morroccanoil Volumizing Mousse on the rest of the hair for a closer to god effect. Blowing out natural curls when you intend to use tongs gives you a smoother hair shaft, of course you can tong diffused curls as well.

BaByliss Curl Secret Hair Curler. £119.99 at Argos

On a recent trip to Canada I bought the Babyliss MiraCurl (Curl Secret in the UK) aka the curling machine that you will see in action in our makeover video. To my surprise I saw them for sale at Jeric Salon here in Singapore – I guess if the PR for Babyliss would have actually returned my call I would have had that info and perhaps would have also known that the Babyliss is not dual voltage (I'm using a Conair transformer thingy) like they told me at the supply store in Canada. Subtle enough?

KEVIN.MURPHY Texture.Master A$34.95 at Adore Beauty

<span style="font-size: medium;" size="3"><span style="font-family: Calibri;" face="Calibri">I finished Nadia’s hair with Kevin Murphy Texture Master. I love the sexy, big, tousled beach hair. I did not tease her hair aside from a smidge on the top – that spray truly is a miracle.

Nadia before and after. Photos by Zurina Bryant. Jewelry by Killari

dermalogica Skin Kit, Age Smart $52.00 at Walgreens

With her skin based with all of my Dermalogica faves I moved on to my other fave: FACE atelier Ultra Foundation in #7.

*Nadia mentions that she often skips foundation because of the heat here in Singapore. Living in hot humid climates can be makeup challenging as sweaty skin can cause makeup to melt and powders to coagulate. If this is you then a primer for oily skin is a must unless you sweat like you are halfway through a Bikram session, in that case, primer is a waste of time.

Laura Mercier Secret Brightening Powder $24.00 USD at Bergdorf Goodman

Start by applying the foundation with Bdellium Tools Studio Precision Kabuki 957 brush and contour with foundation one to two shades darker (on Nadia I used FA #9) Take time to blend with a Beauty Blender in a soft stippling motion. Laura Mercier Secret Brightening Powder (an eye brightener) can be used on it's own or over concealer - I love this powder introduced to me by Dee Daly

I based Nadia's eyes with Bikini-Tini from Benefit Cosmetics and played with a few loose metallic pigments, gold copper and bronze mixing them with Bio-Oil for an added wet look/glow. MAC's Shroom was applied to the inner tear duct and the brow bone.  Black gel liner at the lash line and inner waterline to give the eye some me-ow effect finished with Revlon mascara.

Bio Oil 125ml £15.00 at <a href="http://www.shopstyle.com/browse?fl=r648&pid=popsugar&pdata=354512" target="_new">Very

</a>Bio-Oil is known for many skincare uses but it also makes a great addition to your makeup. Traditionally Vaseline is used on the eyelid for shine but overtime can travel and crease - I find that the Bio-Oil will crease with eyeshadows a smidge but so minimal it's barely worth the mention. Another great use for this? Replacing the 8 Hour Cream used on the lips. I've never understood my peers' love for that cream and Bio-Oil has a smoother feel without the greasy leftovers.

I applied MAC Antonio Lopez for M·A·C 'Coral' Face Palette (Limited Edition) $46.00 at Nordstrom for added contour, colour and highlight.

<span style="font-size: medium;" size="3"><span style="font-family: Calibri;" face="Calibri">
Anyone can be Pretty in Pink! These are my lips in the same colour as what I used on Nadia: CoverGirl Spellbound. On Nadia I lined her lips first with Gosh lipliner in Pink Peony.
