Imagine the local fish market stall owner's surprise when I asked him for fish skin. I tried to explain that it was for a photoshoot.

Not sure where I come up with my ideas. Pretty sure it's either a) from tequila or b) sleepless thinking of shoots, beauty and art.

Clicking on the images above will give you clear makeup credits. I used a collection of YABY, MAC, Benefit, Shu Uemera, FACEatelier, Make Up For Ever, L'Oreal Paris, Kryolan and MINX nails.

Note: The pinkish/red nails were a MINX knock off I found in Far East Plaza in Singapore.

Best Makeup Products 2011

By Andrea Claire · December 24, 2011 · 0 Comments ·

My lists for Best Hair and Best Skincare were kept at a list of 10ish; I fear this list will be longer so I will break it down into sections. Bear with me. [A sampling as to why you should believe me here.]

Laura Mercier Foundation Primer $30.00 USD at Bergdorf Goodman

Laura Mercier's foundation primer was the first I used and although I have tried and liked many others, hers is by far the best. Creating the ultimate canvas for foundation and makeup. Apply over moisturizer or onto clean skin before a Laura Mercier tinted moisturizer or foundation.

Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer SPF 15 $17.00 USD at Sephora

Another Primer that I have tried and like. The price point is more affordable than Laura Mercier and really, there isn't a big difference in results.

**Use Primers sparingly as some formulations if you use too much it will cause foundation to pill. You only need a pea-size for your entire face.

Foundations: I give you my top 3 as I can't settle on just one.

FACEatelier Ultra Foundation. I bet you saw that coming. I first used this since 2004 on Stylin' Gypsies and have been hooked ever since. Excellent coverage that still looks like your skin and not heavy.

Stila Illuminating Tinted Moisturizer Oil-Free SPF 20 $32.00 USD at Sephora

A lightweight, tinted moisturizer infused with protective SPF 20. What it does: This oil-free, water-resistant tinted moisturizer helps skin look softer and younger with micro-fine light diffusing pigments. Perfect for daily use, it creates a sheer wash of natural color and helps diminish the look of fine lines and wrinkles.

Rae Cosmetics Climate Control a semi-sheer foundation with SPF that is heat and sweat-proof. Developed by Austinite Rochelle Rae in the heat of Texas. You have to work to blend quickly as this foundation sets pretty fast but once it's on it ain't goin' nowhere.

Concealers / Under-Eye Brighteners

These to me fit in the same category and not because they are the same thing but because if you have very little baggage under your eyes you may just require an under-eye brightener. Or if you look like you have excess then you may need to dab some brightener on top of your concealer.

By Terry Touche Veloutee, $55 USD is a new find for me. I LOVE it. Makeup Artist, Terry de Gunzburg developed YSL Touche Eclat [which is meh for me; I find the texture chalky] and now has her own line. If you are an Eclat-fan then the transition is a must for you. If you were like me and meh on the Eclat then this is definitely a no-brainer.

Amazing Cosmetics A Little Amazing Light Golden 0.2oz $28.00 USD at SkinStore

This concealer erases dark circles, blemishes, broken capillaries, sun damage and redness with only using tiny amounts of product.Called the ""magic eraser"" by beauty insiders, Amazing Concealer will transform your skin... into Amazing skin.""

I've tried this once feeling and seeing the results immediately. So - keeping in mind that I just bought it and haven't thoroughly tested it yet - but the results at first sight were amazing.

Soap & Glory Trick And TreatmentTM Double-Action Under Eye Dark Circle Corrector $18.00 USD at Sephora

It features a special yellow pigment mix to neutralize dark purple under eye circles. The formula also includes soft-focusing spheres to instantly minimize fine lines and clinically-tested levels of HALOXYL™ dark-circle -lightening peptides. What else you need to know: HALOXYL helps mobilize sluggish, dark under-skin pigment. It works by slowly attacking the root of dark circles while instigating a quick cover up.

Yup. It works. One shade though... any darker skin lovelies care to comment?

Master corrector $36.00 USD at Giorgio Armani

Corrective concealer in four color-balancing shades designed to target specific complexion concerns. Exclusive micro-fil technology allows for targeted correction, visibly concealing imperfections while light-reflecting pearls impart a halo of light imparting a seamless, flawless facial canvas. Corrective concealer shades include:

  • 1. pink: counteracts sallow, dull skin and effectively corrects yellow and olive pigmentation.
  • 2. orange: targets olive or darker skin tones to conceal under-eye circles, freckles, dark spots and hyper-pigmentation.
  • <p>

**Normally at this stage you would lightly powder. I'm not a powder fan. My opinion: it's the most over-used makeup. If you want to age yourself use powder. It accentuates fine lines and makes the skin look dry. I use FACEatelier's Translucent powder SPARINGLY.

Sheer Bronzer $48.00 by Giorgio Armani at Saks Fifth Avenue

Great for sculpting! Create the glow of sun-kissed skin with Sheer Bronzer, a soft micro-fine bronzing powder. Copper and bronze hues warm skin, creating a sculpted glow with shimmering, honey highlights. All skin types.

Soap & Glory Solar Powder cheap and cheerful at 11 pounds... which is what in USD?? $22- ish? [insert Barbie beauty math here]

This comes with a subtle highlighter too so easy-peasey for scuplting. Subtle, blends as you apply so you won't look like an aging 80s rockstar.

LOVE Soap & Glory products. Every one I have tried I have kept in my box o'beauty.

FACEatelier Facade is a beautiful blush that blends out to a wash of colour. Great blendibility so you aren't playing beat the clock trying to blend.

NARS Powder Blush Cheek Color, Orgasm $27.00 USD by NARS at Beauty.com

Um. Yeah... as the name would imply... a beautiful just got laid colour.... If only there was a hair equivilent... Ladies, you know what I mean; show of hands if you actually have had sex with the intention of getting that look... come on... don't be shy...yay, me neither. *wink*

If you are lucky you can grab a limited edition NARS Danmari All About Cheeks Palette $65.00 USD. Long story but I have 2 - that I paid for, NARS shows me no makeup artist love. All of these colours are wearable for everyone and a must-have for beauty pros. If you do a lot of bridal makeup click order now.

Creaseless Cream Eyeshadow/Liner $19.00 USD at Benefit

The only downfall with this product is there are not enough colours. I love it. The texture is sheer but you see it. Benefit's cream shadows are a great base for any eye makeup too as it can act like a bit of a primer. I can layer many colours on top and they don't flake or crease. The most used item in my kit is my Benefit Creaseless Eyeshadow in Birthday Suit. Need a smoky eye? Here.

M·A·C Eyeshadow $15.00 USD by M·A·C at Nordstrom

With a plethora of colours you can't go wrong when looking for a new shadow hitting the MAC counters. One of my FAVE colours of all time is SHROOM. A great champagne colour for the inner eye, brow arch and anywhere else you want a smidge of a highlight.

Yaby Cosmetics has many wonderful things in their line and this is one of my favourite palettes. The pigments are so powerful and look so gorgeous on anyone that I work on. A must for any beauty addict.

I'm still on the search for a great black intense shadow, Any suggestions? The ones I have tried are either wimpy or shimmer. I want a great intense, I'm a goth-type black shadow. Trust me, I have tried a lot and I'd be surprised if someone can come up with one that I haven't tried. Oooo, a challenge! :)

Powerpoint Eye Pencil $15.00 USD at M·A·C

I have so many of these. I love them. They are easily blended and stay-put.

L'Oreal-Voluminous Mistake-Proof Marker Eyeliner $6.99 USD at Ulta

L ́Orèal Voluminous Eyeliner Mistake-Proof Marker has an exclusive Slanted Applicator that provides a flow that is controlled and continuous allowing you to line your eyes perfectly every time. For a soft look, use the pointed tip to draw a thin, fine line. For a more dramatic look, use the slanted side to draw a thick, full line. The fragrance-free formula is water-resistant and won¿t smudge, fade, or smear for all-day wear, up to 12 hours.Ophthalmologist and allergy tested, this eyeliner is suitable for sensitive eyes and contact lens wearers.Removes easily with eye makeup remover. (.056 oz)

D) All of the above. It's amazeballs. Buy it.

Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Gel Eyeliner $21.00 USD Sephora

Get the precision of a liquid liner with the ease of a gel-based formula. The eyeliner glides on smoothly and precisely, then quickly dries down to a long-wearing, water-resistant finish. Also an Allure Best of Beauty Award Winner.

L'Oreal Voluminous Dramatic Volume Building Mascara $6.99 USD at Ulta for bold and beautiful lashes, with dramatic volume.

I first tried this when I was the L'Oreal Paris lead hairstylist for Canadian Idol. L'Oreal was uber generous with their products and I could have opened up my own shop with the product they supplied us for Idol [I led hair for L'Oreal Paris Fashion Week in Toronto for 3 seasons too] I came away with much love for L'Oreal Paris and this mascara is my kit staple.

Revlon Grow Luscious Mascara

$5.99 by Revlon at Target

I have been trying this mascara lately. I have the brownish-black - normally I wear black as I find the brown/ brown-blacks not intense enough, This colour has depth and when I wear it I don't feel the urge to grab my black mascara. Easy to apply and zero under-eye bleeding or smudging. I love the volume I get too - much needed for my aging lashes. *sigh*

Majolica Majorca. Good luck finding this is North America as I don't think it's available there. Anyone?

I love the brush - you can get right to the roots with no fuss.

Lip Liners

Yes - they can look harsh but they do have a purpose especially with the red lips trending right now.

Givenchy Lip Liner

$24.50 USD by Givenchy at Sephora A long-lasting, waterproof lip liner pencil with sharpener. Literally glides onto lips without feathering as it provides a precise line. Enriched with vitamin E, the formula protects lips while skin conditioners retain moisture.

Honestly Givenchy, you need more colours. You have the best lip liners but I need more colours!

MAC Lip Pencil $14.00 USD at Dillard's

Where Givenchy fails in colours MAC wins! Everyone knows MAC for their vast colour range. I find the pencils a smidge dry, I'd like to see a reformulation with some slight added moisture then they would be perfect!

The best neutral goes to Bobbi Brown for the lip colour in Beige. It is wearing out from my 1991 Anniversary palette. One of her original colours so happy to know that it's not a limited edition and I can snag a full tube anytime. A great colour wearable for so many women.

Julie Hewett Noir Lipstick $22.50 USD at Anthropologie

This double-pigmented formula is blended with healing camellia oil and essence of rosebud, for color that will stay on your lips for hours but never dry them out. This claim is so ridiculously true. These lipsticks are genius. I don't know how she did it but the pigments are so vivid and stunning. I use them on shoots, brides and myself. They last longer than the Energizer Bunny.

Jemma Kidd Makeup Dewy Glow Dewy Glow All Over Radiance Creme, Iced Gold $30.00 USD at Beauty.com

Hands-down the BEST highlighter I have ever used. I have tried others that come close but this one I will cry if Jemma Kidd ever discontinues it. A little goes a long way. When you apply this turn your head slowly in the light to see how it catches the light. You want to see it as you turn not when you are static. If you see a lot of highlight staying still then you have applied way too much and then you will just look sweaty Betty.

There's my list!

What are your faves?? Anyone hate anything on the list? Not sure who could possibly but if it doesn't work for you tell me why - maybe it's your technique and I can happily help correct it.

Prom Night! Beauty DIY

By Andrea Claire · May 29, 2011 · 0 Comments ·

This is Sage the morning of prom. She just woke up. Frankly she could have eaten her wheaties and then thrown on her prom dress and gone. But like every girl, she likes to play dress up.

The Canadian International School, Singapore Masquerade Prom 2011!

Sage's dress is from BCBG. Watch our shopping for prom video blog here! The mask is from Far East Plaza aka Teen Shopping Paradise [for me too - love Far East Plaza, cut tag shops galore!]

Get The Look

SKIN: A spritz of Dermalogica Multi-Active Toner followed by Barrier Repair

Foundation: Rae Cosmetics Climate Control 25*

Creaseless Cream Eyeshadow/Liner

$19.00 at Benefit

Eyes: Base with Benefit Birthday Suit [I LOVE this. It's a great shimmery base/primer for shadow. I use this one A LOT]

In Sage's crease I started with Yaby Cosmetics Abyss eye shadow and then layered MAC loose pigment in The Family Crest. I used the MAC pigment under the eyes for the smokey look.

Long-wear Gel Eyeliner

$21.00 at Bobbi Brown

To finish the eyes I used Bobbi Brown Long Wear Gel Eyeliner in Black Ink. TIP: Apply this onto the waterline - it sets nicely and since the gel liners aren't 'flat' they add a little catch light [sparkle] into the eye. Mascara Bad Bad Black Opulash from the MAC Wonder Woman collection

Shimmer Brick Compact - Nectar

$38.00 at Bobbi Brown

Cheeks: To add definition into Sage's cheekbones I started with MAC Taupe Powder Blush layered with Bobbi Brown Shimmer Brick in Nectar. NOTE: Taupe Blush is not for medium-to-dark skin tones as then it will look chalky. Try a matte bronzer two shades darker than your skin for your cheek hollows! Need to know where to put your taupe/bronzer suck in your cheeks... put it there [Referred to as 'fish face' in Allure]

Sage found her 'mask' at Far East Plaza. They were quirky glasses. She removed the arms and then attached black ribbon to tie on. Clever runs in our family.

Since Sage is spoiled her friends might as well be too.

This is Vivian. I dolled her up as well. [PS Vivian designed and made her dress! It's STUNNING!]

Here's the back of her head:

She picked a pretty style. This is braided in two sections AND two types of braids. [yes, I know there are stray hairs - I'm a fan of the deconstructed hair - not the helmet]

  1. I set Vivian's hair on velco rollers for lift. TIP: Curl each section first with a medium/large barrel ceramic curling iron which will add shine and help smooth flyaways
  2. Then I sectioned her hair into two - essentially the top and bottom - think from ear to ear
  3. I teased the roots from the top section and brushed lightly to smooth the outer layer of the teasing, divide into three sections and french braid loosely [without tension] to the occipital [bone bump you feel 1/2 way down your head] secure with an elastic

4. The bottom section is a fishtail braid. Start at one side and fishtail horizontally, include the tail section from the above braid and continue until you run out of hair.

5. Wrap an elastic to secure the ends and tuck up hiding into the hair.

Curse my name or thank me as you try!

Zoie Jean [sans frock] is always upstaging!

Review: Cailyn Cosmetics

By Andrea Claire · February 24, 2011 · 0 Comments ·

The past two days I have spent my afternoons at Beauty Asia. I am a beauty addict. A junkie. The last thing I need is more makeup. But I am drawn in by shimmer, lotions and the promise of pretty. [I made the right career choice]

This is me wearing the listed products below by Cailyn. Note: my lip gloss and blush are MAC.

I wore this out to an evening event in Singapore. My makeup withstood the heat - zero fading, flaking or bleeding.

Cailyn Cosmetics is a mineral makeup based out of LA; I guess they are doing the trade show circuit to get the word out. I bought a few items to try as the woman in their booth was very precise and had all the answers to my questions which means... she knows her stuff.

TriAction Tinted Moisturizer is a tinted moisturizer with a beaded texture that with more blending you get coverage and hydration. Works on ALL skin tones... Tested? You betcha! My colleague and gal pal, Faz was with me. I was ready to prove Cailyn Cosmetics wrong; you see in the scale of 1-10 (one being the lightest) I'm a 2 and Faz is an 11. The TriAction blended out perfectly on me and as well as on Faz! Shocked. Still I don't believe it - but my eyes were clear and sober - it did work on the both of us. [Note: Faz's skin looked a little chalky and when prompted the Cailyn people agreed that darker skin needs to base with a moisturizing cream prior to applying the TA Tinted Moisturizer.]

Faz - your thoughts since it was on your skin??

Gel Liner, now I can start a gel liner exhibition. I have black ones in MAC, Bobbi Brown and Shu Uemura and now in Cailyn Cosmetics. Frankly - they are all the same. So if you are brand loyal then get the one you prefer to dump your money into. Cailyn's price point is lower and will deliver internationally! Hello VISA! The Cailyn liner comes with the brush as part of the packaging - so clever and handy.

Loose Pigment Powders are one of my favourite cosmetic items. They are hyper-pigments that are easily layered and blended. You can achieve simple daytime to dramatic looks. I layered two of Cailyn's pigment powders on my eyes above. They were great. I also use MAC's pigments and FACEatelier's Shimmers.

My overall review on Cailyn? I love it. I wish I would have bought more than one of the TA Tinted Moisturizer as I know I will use this on myself daily. I would have to test how it photographs before I use it on set. [My number one and two foundations I currently use in my kits are FACEatelier and Yaby

Beauty & The IT Bag

In the pages of...Seventeen magazine

By Andrea Claire · August 21, 2010 · 0 Comments ·

After 20 years, I still get a thrill when I see tearsheets with my work. That's me in the top corner sporting my Zuca and Seventeen hot off the press.

This editorial is in the September issue of Seventeen magazine, Singapore. To see the rest of the story you will just have to buy the issue on the stands now!

Want to know my secrets from the shoot?

As I always do, I prepped our model's skin with Dermalogica skincare.

Foundation: DiorSkin Nude Natural Glow Hydrating Makeup  021

Blush: Shiseido Luminizing Satin Face Color RS 302

Eye Shadow:

MAC Cosmetics Straw Harvest on the lid

Yaby Cosmetics First Snow in the tear duct

Part way through our shoot I glammed up the eye with a little wing-tipped liner. To achieve the look I used an eyeliner pencil and a flat angled shadow brush. Sweep your angled shadow brush back and forth on your kohl pencil and then with eyes open looking directly into the mirror brush on to create a softer wing-tip liner look.

*TIP Applying eye shadow with your eyes opened will give you a better idea of where you want to place your makeup. Try this 'open-eye' technique for creating/cheating your crease - eyes should be opened naturally and not an exaggerated stare.

I prepped the model's hair using Phyto Hair products. The voluminzing spray is amazing! Not sticky and gives great grip to the hair. I then set her hair on ceramic hot rollers I got from good ole Target!

Sadly you can't see them in my blog, but I applied MINX Pulse; aren't these ridiculously cool!! LOVE MINX

Top 10 Beauty Faves for August '09!

By Andrea Claire · August 7, 2009 · 0 Comments ·

In no specific order, the latest and greatest beauty products added to my kit:

  1. JK Jemma Kidd Mannequin Skin complexion enhancer available at Target, which is where I am spending my time these days! This beauty veil is stunning on it's own or mixed with your foundation for a dewy glow. Since it reflects light, there is a gentle diffusing feel to it camouflaging fine lines, imperfections and pigmentation.
  2. Weather Works by John Frieda - Shampoo, conditioner and style sealant creme, the trio's claim: 'seals out style-ruining weather effects'. Tried, tested and TRUE! In Austin Texas anyway where I have relo'ed to.  Whether I straighten, air dry or curl, my hair lasts all day y'all!
  3. MAC lustre lipstick in Most Popular - I would classify this as a rich purple-pink that would suit all. I love it with clean skin, subtle cheek colour, little mascara and MAC Shroom in the tear-ducts - pretty-oh so-pretty!
  4. Skin Food's Avocado Lip Balm - enough moisture without leaving your lips slippery so layering lippy on top is fine since you don't get the 'lip bleed' like other lip balms can cause.
  5. Joe Fresh matte lipstick in Ruby - for that true Coco red - to die for for fall! Cheap and cheerful- the score with this is the red is a GREAT shade, there is no 'flavour' like some cheap lipsticks have AND the packaging seems to 'click' so the lid does not randomly come off in your bag. Available in Loblaws grocery stores around Canada.
  6. REVLON magnifying mirror - No one really likes to see their imperfections magnified x10 BUT this handy tool helps with those fine hairs in the 'unibrow' area- another plus - if you are a spaz for applying dark lipstick applying while looking into this mirror will give you a perfect pout. Obviously this tool I use personally and not on jobs - when I am working on beauty specific jobs I have my specs :)
  7. Joe Fresh Faded Violet eyeshadow - purples are in for fall beauty. This violet is a soft sheer colour, for more of a punch layer this on top of charcoal or black liner - I prefer MAC's Powerpoint liners to layer on as they are smudge-proof and therefore your shadows will stay put.
  8.  Sephora Express compact eyelash curler - a little tricky at first to figure out so as not to pinch your lid but, once mastered you get a great consistent curl to your lashes. Don't forget to curl in 3 steps - roots, middle and ends. Most women curl the roots only which give a sharpness to the lashes; creating a curve gives you sexy doe-eyes.
  9. Batiste Dry Shampoo - I have used this for years but have noticed it is now available more globally. This is fantastic for humid weather, oily scalps or just stretching in-between washes. On fine hair, a little spritz at your roots will give you volume and the beauty about this trick - it will help your 'do last all day since it will absorb oils and heavy pollutants throughout the day.
  10.  Yaby - ooooh! Where do I start? The Yaby make up line has so many gorgeous products! My fave this month - the Pearl Paint Palette! Say that 10x fast! No need to be a make up artist to have fun with this palette - any age, any time - the colours are stunning and the blendabilty is to die for!

Honourable mention: Dermalogica Multivitamin Power Firm - yes, I speak about this miracle product to everyone I know! I seriously get asked by strangers what I use in my eye area. When I have my teenagers with me people gasp out-loud and ask what I use. This is my fountain of youth!  As long as people guess I am 25 I will keep using this eye cream!
